His Excellency, Prince Bassey Edet Otu, has received the Certificate of No Objection for the Nigeria for Women Program Scale-Up (NFWP-SU) from the World Bank, marking a significant milestone in Cross River State’s commitment to women’s economic empowerment.
The NFWP-SU is a flagship initiative designed to expand economic opportunities for women, strengthen livelihoods, and address gender inequality through inclusive growth and resilience-building interventions.
Anchored by the Commissioner for Women Affairs, in collaboration with the Ministry of International Development Cooperation (MIDC), the first phase of the program targets the training and empowerment of over 450,000 women across various Women Affinity Groups in the three senatorial districts of Cross River State.
In November 2025, the Commissioner for Finance, Dr. Michael Odere, led the state team during a rigorous assessment and readiness mission by the World Bank delegation. The assessment underscored Cross River State’s institutional, financial, and operational preparedness for effective program implementation.
The State Program Coordinator, Dr. Mrs. Afiong Ugbaja, reaffirmed the state’s readiness, highlighting strong inter-ministerial coordination and stakeholder engagement.
The State Ministry of Finance plays a critical role in the program, providing fiscal oversight, ensuring compliance with World Bank financial management standards, and strengthening accountability, transparency, and sustainability throughout program ex*****on.
This milestone reinforces Cross River State’s resolve to invest in women as key drivers of economic growth, social development, and community resilience.
