🦠 Tetratherapy in Tuberculosis (TB).
📆 Treatment Phases
1. Intensive Phase (2 months)
→ HRZE daily
2. Continuation Phase (4 months)
→ Usually Isoniazid + Rifampicin (HR) only
→ Total: 6 months treatment

👶 Special Cases
• Pregnancy: Avoid streptomycin (not part of HRZE) due to ototoxicity
• Liver disease: Modify or monitor regimen closely
• Drug-resistant TB: This first-line tetratherapy won’t be enough; need second-line agents (longer, more toxic)

🔬 Monitoring
• Liver function (ALT/AST)
• Uric acid (for pyrazinamide)
• Vision (for ethambutol)
• Sputum AFB (acid-fast bacilli) smear and culture

💡 Why 4 Drugs?
• TB bacteria exist in different metabolic states
• Each drug targets a different subgroup
• Prevents drug resistance
• Maximizes sterilizing and bactericidal effects

🍼 What is Neonatal Jaundice?

Neonatal jaundice is a common condition in newborn babies where the skin and the whites of the eyes turn yellow. This happens when there is too much of a substance called bilirubin in the baby’s blood.

🌞 Is It Normal?

Yes – in most cases, jaundice is normal and harmless, especially if it appears after the first day of life. It usually goes away on its own

⚠️ When to act fast

☑️The yellow color spreads to the legs, arms, or palms

☑️The baby is not feeding well, is very sleepy, or has a high-pitched cry

☑️The baby seems sick, weak, or not gaining weight

👶 Causes of Jaundice

☑️Normal newborn changes (most common)

☑️Not getting enough milk in the first few days

☑️Blood group mismatch between mother and baby

☑️Infections or other medical problems

💡 How Is It Treated?

☑️Mild jaundice often needs no treatment.

☑️Phototherapy: Special blue lights help

remove excess bilirubin.

☑️Feeding support: Breastfeed more often

to help remove bilirubin.

✅ What Can Parents Do?

✔️Make sure your baby is feeding well

✔️Check your baby’s skin and eyes for

discoloration

✔️keep follow-up appointments after going home from the hospital.

✔️Don’t delay if you notice signs of severe jaundice.

🏥 Remember

Most jaundice in newborns is normal and treatable — but early detection is important to prevent serious complications.

📞 If you are in doubt — contact your

doctor or nearest health facility immediately.
