Have you noticed that your eye itches during a particular season (dry season or rainy season)?

Have you noticed that you see things in your peripheral vision ("side" vision) well but can't see things in your central visual field?

Take a minute and do this:
Look at a clock that has hands and numbers. Are you able to see the numbers & edge of the clock but you are finding it difficult to see the hands clearly?
The hands of the clock are in your central visual field while the numbers & clock edge are in your peripheral/"side" vision.

WHICH FLYING OBJECTS DOES YOUR JOB EXPOSE YOU TO?

Are you a wood chopper exposed to flying pieces of wood? Are you exposed to lots of dust?
Does your job expose you to flying particles?

Then it is essential to protect your eyes at work!
Those particles could easily enter your eyes, and we don't want that to happen!

Don't act the "badass" with your eyes. Use the right protective gear.
Wear your safety googles/safety glasses at work - the ones with side shields; they will protect your eyes from those flying objects.

WANT TO KNOW ONE OF THE TACTICS THIS THIEF USES?

Glaucoma is a condition that gradually damages the nerve that helps with vision; this nerve is called the optic nerve.

Let's do something for a minute:
Sit or stand still and look forward. Do you notice that you can see the things that are on your left and right sides, even while looking forward?

Remember that time someone gave you something from your side and you were able to see it even though you were looking straight ahead of you? Or that time something almost hit you from your side, and you were able to see it and dodge it even though you were looking straight ahead of you? That is called your peripheral vision; it's what some call "side vision." Now, glaucoma starts damaging the side vision first.

And so, gradually, a person is no longer able to see what is happening on their right and left side but he/she would be able to see when they look forward.

This disease gradually 'erodes' the side vision before it starts to affect your ability to see what is in front of you - by the time this happens and you have blurry vision, the damage done to your eye nerves is LARGE (90% is already damaged). Do you now understand why you may not notice that your vision is being damaged? Do you now see why we advise that you go for routine eye checks with your Ophthalmologist?

SOUTH-EAST NIGERIA IS GOING BLIND!!!

WORLD GLAUCOMA WEEK 2020:

Ophthalmologists worldwide wage war against blindness and visual impairment by combating various eye conditions.

There is a certain eye disease that is the commonest cause of irreversible blindness worldwide! 😱

This eye disease is called GLAUCOMA.
Ever heard of it?

It is also called the SILENT THIEF OF SIGHT, because it sneaks up on you (usually without any symptoms) and destroys your vision; so that by the time you realise your sight is not as it should be, it is too late. 😭

And so, to curb the devastation that Glaucoma leaves in its wake, Ophthalmologists all over the world set aside one week every year to INTENSIFY efforts to protect people from blindness.

This week is called the WORLD GLAUCOMA WEEK.
This year, the World Glaucoma Week lasts from March 8, 2020 (today) till March 14, 2020.

THESE HOUSEHOLD CHEMICALS CAN DAMAGE YOUR EYES AS MUCH AS LABORATORY CHEMICALS!

If you work in a laboratory, protecting your eyes cannot be overemphasized. You might have been able to get away with working in a lab without eye protection for years; but no one knows the day a chemical will splash right into their eyes and cause terrible damage.

Anytime, you are around chemicals, wear your safety googles.

Some chemicals found in the home could damage your eyes if they come into contact with your eyes: glass polish, oven cleaning products, vinegar, nail polish remover, battery acid, or fertilizer.
Be very careful with these chemicals. Keep your eyes safe.

HOW BEING A PHOTOGRAPHER COULD DAMAGE YOUR EYES!

Do you know that photographer's lamps can cause flash burn? It's true!

Are you a photographer, a photographer's assistant or a model? Are you often exposed to a photographer's lamps?
Then, it is wise not to miss routine eye checks with an Ophthalmologist.
Those lamps expose you to UV radiation!

Know anyone who spends a lot of time in the sun? They could be at risk of developing flash burn from the ultraviolet radiation their eyes are exposed to from the sun!

ULTRAVIOLET RADIATION AFFECTS THE EYES TOO!

Ultraviolet radiation is harmful!

It "burns" the transparent front part of the eye called the cornea - and this condition is what we call the flash burn or welder's flash or arc eye.

Do you know the effect ultraviolet radiation has on the eyes?
It can cause cataracts, cancer, and pterygium.

THIS IS HOW WELDING DAMAGES THE EYES

Ever heard of welder's flash? Flash burn? Arc eye?

Welder's flash is an eye condition that results when welders don't use a welder's mask/face shield while welding.

Welder's flash is also called flash burn or arc eye!

The welding process releases ultraviolet rays which can cause damage to the eyes if the right eye-protective gear is not being used.

Dear welder, ALWAYS use a welder's mask/face shield while welding.
Not a welder? No problem! Be your 'brother's keeper' - please pass the message on to any welder around you.

Have you been welding without a welder's mask? Do you visit a welder's shop a lot?
