Ageing Healthy #
Ageing is inevitable as long as you keep living and how we live now may determine how we age. It is imperative that we start now to improve our ageing process.
Ageing is the gradual deterioration of the physiological process that is essential for survival and reproduction as an organism gets older. Ageing is a process and complex.
The rate of the decline or deterioration is affected by many factors such as genetic, lifestyle, nutrition, diseases, environment, etc., and that is why people age differently.
However, there are some things that you can do to help you live and age healthy.
1. Engaging in regular physical activity. WHO recommends 150 min moderate activity or 75 min vigorous activity in a week. Physical activity regulates the body composition, improves mood and sleep and helps in preventing diseases that speeds ageing. Note that the physical activity that I am talking about is exercise. The duration can be as low as 30 minutes daily. Examples are running, jogging, cycling, dancing, walking, swimming, skipping etc.
2. Having adequate sleep. One of the things that sleep does is to help the brain and the body to recover from the activities done during the waking period. When you do not have enough sleep, it may trigger the production of stress hormones, which can shut down the immune system making you susceptible to developing diseases that accelerate ageing. It is recommended that we have 7-8 hrs sleep daily. To help improve your sleep duration, you can schedule your bed time and be consistent with it. If you are having sleep difficulty, engage in regular exercise as it may be helpful in improving your sleep or you can discuss this with your doctor.
3. Eating healthy. Healthy eating helps to boost your immune system function, improve your weight, eradicate toxins and free radicals that destroy the cells, and may help prevent chronic diseases. Eating healthy means eating a healthy balanced diet. That is eating a wide varieties of foods in their right proportions, and drinking the right amount of water. Maintain a healthy body weight by eating the right amount of food.
