Before most people ever reach a therapist, they talk to someone close; a friend, a neighbor, a community member. That’s why we train lay counsellors: everyday people who offer basic mental health support and know when to refer for more help.

In IDP camps and vulnerable communities, where professional services are limited, lay counsellors bridge the gap. They listen, comfort, and guide, often becoming the first point of care for someone in distress.

We believe mental health care should be local, trusted, and accessible.

Last week, we participated in the Training of Trainers (ToT) for the We Can Work Academy, a program designed to deepen facilitators’ understanding of inclusive teaching methods and the Academy’s curriculum.

Led in collaboration with Disability Inclusion Advisors (DIAs), the sessions offered practical skills on engaging and accommodating persons with disabilities.

As mental health facilitators for the project, we also guided trainers on creating safe, inclusive, and emotionally supportive learning environments.

We’re excited to train more people and continue prioritizing the mental well-being of persons with disabilities💙

We are happy to be part of the We Can Work program for the 2nd year, an initiative aimed at improving access to dignified and fulfilling work for 1,000,000 young women and men with disabilities across Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Ghana, Nigeria, and Senegal.

In Nigeria, we are leading the mental health component of the program, creating awareness, promoting emotional resilience, ensuring safeguarding, and providing access to both individual and group therapy. By integrating mental health into skills-building and entrepreneurship training, we're empowering young people with disabilities to understand their rights, break down barriers, and care for their well-being as they step confidently into the world of work.

Over 8.7 billion people in the world—and yet, millions still struggle in silence.

At Idimma Health Initiative and The Sunshine Series- Mind wellness , we continue to advocate for accessible, culturally sensitive mental health care for young people in Africa and people of African descent everywhere.

This year’s theme, “Empowering young people to create the families they want in a fair and hopeful world,” reminds us that mental well-being is the foundation of that hope.

Because no population can truly thrive if mental health is overlooked.
Mental health is a human right. Let’s treat it like one.

We’re happy to announce a new partnership between Idimma Health Initiative and Reach Digital Health! 🤝 This collaboration marks a powerful step forward in expanding access to mental health care across Nigeria and Sub-Saharan Africa through digital innovation and community-driven approaches.

Together, we will:
✔️ Co-create impactful, youth- and gender-informed mental health interventions
✔️ Design scalable models that merge grassroots counseling with digital engagement
✔️ Collaborate on proposal development, joint fundraising, and strategic partnerships
✔️ Leverage mobile platforms and digital tools to provide accessible, real-time mental health support to those who need it most.

Why this matters:
Idimma Health Initiative brings deep experience in youth-led, community-based mental health advocacy. From running one of Nigeria’s most responsive mental health helplines to training police officers, media professionals, lay counselors, young people, and survivors of violence in trauma-informed care and basic psychosocial support. Our work is rooted in creating systems that are accessible, inclusive, and truly responsive to the needs of the people we serve.

Reach Digital Health brings decades of expertise in behaviorally informed digital health programs, such as MomConnect and B-Wise, which have reached over 100 million people globally through mobile messaging, chatbots, and national health integration.

Together, we are combining our strengths to transform mental health care, making it more accessible, inclusive, and responsive to the needs of our communities.

World Refugee Day is a reminder that behind every statistic is a human story of loss, courage, and hope.
Refugees face unimaginable hardships that deeply impact their mental well-being yet, access to mental health support remains limited.

At .mma and we believe mental health is not a privilege, it is a human right.
We continue to advocate, create safe spaces, and provide tools to help refugees heal, grow, and reclaim their peace💚

Today and everyday let us remember: no one should have to suffer in silence.
Mental health matters, for everyone, everywhere.

We are looking back on our script development workshop for Season 2 of the Strong Voices Radio Drama, and we’re reminded of the power of storytelling in driving change.

This season, now produced in both English and Hausa, dives deep into the intersection of mental health, Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV), and the rights of women and girls.

We’re happy to partner with and grateful for the support from in bringing these critical conversations to life.

Let’s amplify these voices together! Interested in collaborating or sponsoring future episodes? Email us at 📩 admin@idimma.org
