Various characteristics of elderly people may impact how they are cared for.

Some older adults have sensory impairments and exhibit symptoms of dementia. Others need assistance with everyday tasks. The form of care used will largely depend on the individual’s needs, both physical and mental.

This guide will help you understand some common issues faced by older adults. Furthermore, provide you with advice on caring for them effectively.

Different Characteristics of Elderly People and How to Deal With Them
1. Sensory Impairment

Frequently, older adults suffer from problems with vision, hearing, and taste. It can be due to the biological process of aging or illness, or injury. It is pretty standard for older people to report difficulties in recognizing faces, distinguishing colors, and experiencing pain; such symptoms may be very distressing for their family members and friends. These symptoms are because changes are happening in the brain as a person ages.

2. Dementia

Dementia is the loss of cognitive function (i.e., thinking) that is characteristic of aging, particularly in older adults 65 or older. In most cases, dementia is caused by diseases (e.g., Alzheimer’s disease) but may also be due to other causes such as head injuries, strokes, or Parkinson’s disease. Dementia is usually characterized by significant impairment in daily living activities and communication.

3. Stroke

Although strokes are not as standard as dementia and mild cognitive impairment, they can have a devastating impact on an older person’s life. A blockage causes a stroke in an artery, which causes the brain to stop receiving oxygen. It may be because of a blood clot, or ischemia, which means that the blood vessels supplying the brain have clogged.

4. Alzheimer’s Disease

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disease because of loss of memory and the ability to learn new things, causing difficulty with speaking and thinking. It is the most common form of dementia and affects about 8.5 million Americans or one in four people over age 65. The incidence of AD increases with age, with affected individuals becoming increasingly more mentally impaired as they grow older.

5. Physical Impairments

Older adults may become physically disabled when they suffer a stroke. They cannot walk independently or suffer an illness such as Parkinson’s disease or arthritis that renders them unable to perform their everyday life activities.

6. Communication Difficulties

Communication difficulties can occur for a variety of reasons. Some people with dementia speak differently than they were used to, such that friends and family face problems understanding them. Others have hearing difficulties that make it impossible for them to communicate with caregivers or other people who are not in the same room. It is also possible that the patient has aphasia and cannot form words properly because the brain has lost some of its power to control speech muscles.

7. Social Problems

Older people may experience social problems as a result of their illness or accident. They may become isolated and fearful, or they may fail to recognize friends and family members. Social isolation may lead to changes in behavior, such as increased anger or depression. As a result, social isolation should be prevented where possible so that the older adult can have regular contact with other people.

8. Pain

Pain is a significant factor in the lives of most older adults. Many have a history of chronic pain or significant accidents which have caused them to be in constant pain. Some people do not report their pain because they are shy or believe that they do not deserve acknowledgment. Pain is also more common in older patients than younger ones and is likely to have various causes such as arthritis and cancer.

9. Diverse Communication Needs

Communication needs will vary depending on the patient. Some people need to speak with others to express their thoughts and feelings or ask questions. Others may take a long time to collect their ideas and be better understood if given time before expressing themselves verbally.

Importance of Understanding Behaviors of Elderly
It is important to remember that when communicating with older adults, it is normal to feel that they do not understand what you are saying. It could be because of memory problems or because they are not sure how to express themselves. As a result, you must keep trying to communicate with them and try different approaches, such as using pictures or gestures to convey your message.

How to Deal With Problems Caused by Older Adults
These problems are manageable but may need some extra attention. Different techniques are available for handling them depending on the situation, such as using a bedside commode or having a trained caregiver around. The caregiver undergone trainings how to deal with the patient to prevent accidents or injury. It is also essential to keep a positive attitude, which will help the patient cope with their illness.

Older adults are a population that needs more and more attention because the number of people who are growing old is increasing every year. Many physical and mental problems may appear in older adults. Likewise, effective communication between the elderly patient and the Joyful Time

Sleep Tips for Older Adults
Research has shown that older people can take steps to improve their sleep. These steps often involve focusing on improving sleep hygiene and developing habits that encourage quality sleep.

Exercise: Older people who exercise regularly fall asleep faster, sleep longer, and report better quality of sleep. Exercise is one of the best things older people can do for their health.

Reduce bedroom distractions: Televisions, smartphones, and bright lights can make it more challenging to fall asleep. Keep the television in another room and try not to fall asleep with it turned on. Move electronics out of the bedroom and reserve the bedroom for only sleeping and s*x.

Avoid substances that discourage sleep: Substances like alcohol, to***co, caffeine, and even large meals late in the day can make sleep more challenging. Consider quitting smoking, reducing caffeine intake, and eating dinner at least four hours before bedtime.

Keep a regular sleep schedule: Aging can make it more difficult to recover from lost sleep. Avoid sudden changes in sleep schedules. This means going to bed and waking up at the same time every day and being careful about napping too long or too close to bedtime.

Develop a bedtime routine: Find activities that help you relax before bed. Many older people enjoy taking a warm bath, reading, or finding some quiet time before getting into bed.
Safe Sleeping for Older Adults
As people age, it is helpful to make changes to the bedroom environment that reduce the risk of falls and accidents and makes it easier to call for help when needed. There are several steps that older adults can take for a safer night’s sleep.

Keep a phone by the bed: It is important to be able to call for help from bed. Put a phone on the nightstand and keep a list of important phone numbers nearby. But be careful about keeping a smartphone nearby, particularly if it receives too many notifications during the night or if there is too much temptation to look at the bright screen.

Make sure a light is within reach: Having a light easily accessible reduces the risk of stumbling, tripping, or falling in the dark when getting out of bed. Lights with motion sensors may be helpful in hallways or the bathroom.
Reduce hazards in the bedroom: Never smoke in bed and be careful when placing objects in the bedroom that may become trip hazards, like rugs, cords, stools, and furniture. It is safest to have a clear path from the bed to the door.

WAY TO ENCOURAGE GRANDPA AND GRANDMA TO EAT

Growing up, your mom and dad always encouraged you to eat well. Now, however, your parents are getting older — and you’re starting to notice that they barely eat anything but toast or cereal themselves.

If this story sounds familiar, you’re certainly not alone! Many seniors lose their appetites as they age, for a host of reasons — and this appetite loss is a common source of concern for loving family caregivers.

While some loss of appetite is to be expected as a normal part of aging, it can be worrying when you start to notice that your elderly loved one is losing weight, letting food spoil in the fridge, or even refusing to eat altogether. Let’s explore some common reasons why the senior in your life may be putting off food, and what you can do to help:

Causes of Appetite Loss In the Elderly

In an interview with NBC, one Indiana dietitian who serves the elderly estimated that “half of new admissions to long-term-care facilities are malnourished.” Research also suggests that about 20 percent of seniors who live alone display at least four warning signs of poor nutritional health.

As we get older, some appetite loss is entirely normal. Our metabolism naturally slows as we age, and most of us tend to become less physically active, meaning that we require fewer calories overall. Similarly, changes to the senses of taste and smell can cause many older adults to experience food differently, leading to a slightly lessened appetite.

With that said, however, severe and intense loss of appetite can be a cause for concern in its own right — and, in some cases, an early warning sign of more serious health problems. Over time, eating less may cause seniors to lose a significant amount of weight or become malnourished. Nutrient deficiencies can lead to a whole host of health problems.

Meanwhile, for some seniors, an ongoing refusal to eat could stem from an underlying health condition. Some older adults give up on eating because they are having dental problems, ranging from ill-fitting dentures to dry mouth. Others may give up on cooking and serving themselves because of limited mobility, or changes to their sense of sight. In other cases, a lack of appetite could be a serious side effect stemming from one or more medications, or a symptom of a serious health condition, such as a gastrointestinal disorder, infection, depression, or a thyroid problem. Finally, if your loved one is forgetting to eat, or experiencing confusion or mood swings at mealtimes, this could be a sign that they are experiencing Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia.

professional senior companion can make mealtimes easier — including serving up finger foods that don’t require utensils, cutting up fruits and meats into bite-sized pieces, getting rid of excessive table clutter and distractions, or serving soft foods, such as smoothies and stews.

Make Mealtimes a Social Event

For cultures across the globe, sharing food is an incredibly important part of daily life. Studies have shown that in addition to boosting quality of life and happiness, regularly sharing meals with others can actually promote healthier eating habits among seniors. In fact, research suggests that seniors take longer to dine and make more nutritious choices when dining with companions, as opposed to eating alone. 85 percent of seniors also say that having someone to share their meals makes dining more satisfying. If you cannot always be there to share a meal with your older loved ones, a senior companion may be able to step in and help! With a senior companion, you can trust that your loved one will be able to split a meal and share great conversation with a reliable friend.

CAREGIVER
3.5 SKILLS CHECKLIST: MAKING AN UNOCCUPIED BED CHECKLIST

Bed making is a necessary skill for nursing assistants to keep the environment clean, prevent skin breakdown and the spread of infection, and respect the resident’s dignity by providing an orderly environment. Linens should be changed at least weekly or whenever they become soiled.

Follow these infection control guidelines when making beds:

*Never allow linens to touch your uniform.

*Do not transfer linens from one room to another.

*Do not place soiled linens on the floor.

*If linens touch the floor, they should be placed in the soiled laundry for cleaning and not used.

*Do not shake linens because it can spread airborne pathogens.

*Store clean linens in a closed closet or a covered cart.

Making an Unoccupied Bed Checklist

1. Gather Supplies: Linens

2. Routine Pre-Procedure Steps:

Knock on the client’s door.
Perform hand hygiene.

Introduce yourself and identify the resident.
Maintain respectful, courteous, and professional communication at all times.
Provide for privacy.
Explain the procedure to the client.

3. Procedure Steps:

* Place a clean barrier on a flat surface. Flip the linens over and place them on the barrier so the fitted sheet is on top.
*Don gloves.
*Look for any personal belongings that may have been left in the bed and return them to their proper place.
*Untuck the corners and roll all linens together to the middle of the bed.
*Place soiled linens in a linen bag or other appropriate container according to facility policy.
*Remove gloves.
*Perform hand hygiene.
*If the bed is soiled, sanitize it or notify environmental services to sanitize it.
*After the bed has dried from sanitization, place the fitted sheet on the bed. Seams should be against the mattress and away from the resident. Smooth the sheet to prevent wrinkles that can cause injury to fragile skin. (Note: If a flat sheet is used as the bottom sheet, refer to sub-bullets below for details on making mitered corners.)
*Place the lift sheet where it is estimated the resident’s shoulders to hips will be when they are in bed.
*Place a soaker pad or other waterproof barrier on top of the lift sheet.
*Place the flat sheet on top and smooth it out. *Make mitered corners at the foot of the bed by doing the following:
*Tuck the entire end of the sheet under the foot of the bed.
*While facing the foot of the bed, create a 45-degree angle from the corner of the bed with the sheet.
*Place the angled edge of the sheet on top of the bed and tuck in anything hanging below the bed frame.
*Lower the angled sheet back over the edge of the bed.
*Place a bedspread or blanket on top of the sheet per the resident’s preference. Make a mitered corner in the bedspread or blanket by performing the steps above.
*Lay a pillow on the bed and slide the pillowcase over the pillow.
*Put the pillow at the head of the bed with the open end of the pillowcase faced away from the door. Repeat for multiple pillows.

4. Post-Procedure Steps:

*Perform hand hygiene.
*Check on resident comfort and ask if anything else is needed.
*Ensure the bed is low and locked. Check the brakes.
*Place the call light or signaling device within reach of the resident.
*Open the door and privacy curtain.
*Perform hand hygiene.
*Report abnormal findings to the client's relative and nurse/ health care provider

3. Loss and grief: Experiencing the loss of loved ones, declining health, or decreased independence can lead to anger and sadness.

4. Fear and anxiety: Concerns about the future, financial security, or health issues can cause anxiety and anger.

5. Sensory overload: Too much noise, crowds, or stimulation can overwhelm and irritate older adults.

6. Sleep disturbances: Poor sleep or discomfort can contribute to irritability.

You might take care of a loved one in your home or theirs. Whether you do it full time or just help out once in a while, consider these things when caring for an older adult.

Plan Ahead
Talk to your loved one about what kind of help they think they need and how they’d like to get it. It can be hard sometimes to plan ahead, because you don’t know how needs will change. But come up with a road map for care.

Learn how you can get the most out of your medical care as you get older.

Share
Get your loved one’s doctor involved. Make sure you know all their health problems and what level of care they might require.

Ask these questions: Is your loved one able to stay at home alone with help from time to time? Or would it be better for them to move in with you or into a facility? Make a care plan to chart what kind of help they need.

Types of Care
You might have to provide different kinds of support depending on your loved one’s needs:

Personal care: They might need help with bathing, dressing, grooming, and other personal care. This could include helping them get to the bathroom and cleaning themselves after. For aging parents, it’s a role reversal because they’re used to taking care of their kids. If either of you is uncomfortable with bathing or toilet care, you may want to hire a home health aide.

Household help: They might need help with cleaning, laundry, and yard work. Food also can be a key part of caregiving. Your loved one could need help grocery shopping and preparing healthy meals. You can cook for them or have some meals delivered. Taking your loved one out to eat or bringing them to your home gives them a chance to be social and visit with other people.

Emotional support: Your loved one might need you to spend time with them, just talking and offering emotional support. They could come to rely on you for regular visits to keep them company, so they don’t get lonely. Sometimes older people can easily forget things or get grumpy. Be calm and patient with them when you’re together.

Health care: You might need to help with their medical needs, like making sure they take medicines or going with them to doctor’s appointments. To make it easier, you can prepare pillboxes that have each day’s pills ready for a whole week. It helps to go to doctor visits to ask questions and take notes.

Understand Health Issues
There’s a chance your loved one will have some health concerns. Older people often have issues like heart disease, Alzheimer’s, and depression.

It’s important that you learn about any health problems, so you know what to look out for. You’ll be able to spot symptoms if things get worse. You’ll also be better prepared at doctor visits to give updates on their health.

Make the Home Safe
Whether your loved one is staying in their home or yours, make safety a priority. Take steps to reduce their risk of falling, and other basic safety measures like these:

Remove throw rugs.
Place non-skid strips on hardwood and tile floors.

Add safety rails in showers and tubs and near the toilet.

Reduce water temperature to below 120 F (48.9 C).

Move furniture and clear clutter to create clear, wide paths.

Place nightlights throughout the home.
Cover stairs with non-skid strips or carpet, and install nightlights at the top and bottom.

Know That Plans Can Change
You have a care plan today that’s working well. But your loved one’s needs can change.

Keep track of how things are going to make sure your plan still meets their needs. You may find you can’t provide enough medical care or aren’t able to be around all the time the way your loved one needs.

And if you're injured or come down with an illness like COVID-19 yourself, you’ll need to have a backup plan in place. Choose someone who can take care of your loved one if you can’t. Don't risk spreading the illness to them.

At that time, you’ll need to have a talk with them and their doctor about better options. It’s important to communicate and always take stock of the relationship to make sure you’re doing what’s best for everyone.

Take Care of Yourself
When you’re caring for someone else, it’s often hard to focus on your own needs. You may even feel guilty when you do. But taking care of yourself will help you be more focused and do a better job for your loved one. There are a few things you can do to stay on top of your game:

Make time for sleep. A daily routine can help teach your body and mind it’s time for sleep.
Try a mindfulness practice. Yoga or tai chi help you relax.
Don’t forget to eat. Skipping meals can make you irritable and tired. Get plenty of healthy food and cut back on alcohol.
Stay connected. Friends and family can help you feel less alone. If you need more structured support, check with local hospitals or organizations for your loved one’s conditions.
