๐ŸŸฃBreast engorgement is the result of increased blood flow in the breasts in the days after the delivery of a baby. The increased blood flow helps your breasts make plenty milk , but it can also cause pain and discomfort.

๐ŸŸ  Engorgement may occur for the first time in the first week or two after delivery. It can also reoccur at any point if you continue to breastfeed.
Milk production may not occur until three to five days postpartum.

๐ŸŸกOn the whole, breast engorgement is a great reassurance for mothers and lovely feedback to tell her breasts are responding to their newbornโ€™s demands, but equally, engorgement is uncomfortable and, if not resolved or if in the presence of feeding issues, can lead to blocked milk ducts or mastitis.

๐Ÿ”ตCertain conditions or events may make you more likely to experience the swollen fullness thatโ€™s commonly associated with breast engorgement. These causes include:

๐Ÿ”นMissing a feeding
๐Ÿ”นSkipping a pumping session
๐Ÿ”นCreating an overabundance of milk for the babyโ€™s appetite
๐Ÿ”นSupplementing with formula between nursing sessions, which may reduce nursing later
๐Ÿ”นWeaning too quickly
๐Ÿ”นNursing a baby thatโ€™s ill
๐Ÿ”นDifficulty with latching and sucking
not expressing breast milk when it first comes in because you donโ€™t plan to breastfeed

๐’๐ˆ๐†๐๐’ ๐Ž๐… ๐„๐๐†๐Ž๐‘๐†๐„๐Œ๐„๐๐“

๐ŸŸ Below is a list of common symptoms of breast engorgement:

๐Ÿ”ธBreasts feel uncomfortably full.
๐Ÿ”ธSkin on breast is tight.
๐Ÿ”ธAreola is hard.
๐Ÿ”ธNipple has possibly been pulled flat.
๐Ÿ”ธEngorgement usually affects the whole breast

๐๐‘๐„๐•๐„๐๐“๐Ž๐ ๐Ž๐… ๐๐‘๐„๐€๐’๐“ ๐„๐๐†๐Ž๐‘๐†๐„๐Œ๐„๐๐“

๐ŸŸขYou canโ€™t prevent breast engorgement in the first days after giving birth. Until your body knows how to regulate your milk production, you may overproduce.

๐Ÿ”ตHowever, you can prevent later episodes of breast engorgement with these tips and techniques:

๐Ÿ”นFeed or pump regularly. Your body makes milk regularly, regardless of nursing schedule.

๐Ÿ”นBreastfeed baby at least every one to three hours. Pump if your baby isnโ€™t hungry or youโ€™re away.

๐Ÿ”นUse ice packs to decrease supply. In addition to cooling and calming inflamed breast tissue, ice packs and cold compresses may help decrease milk supply.

๐Ÿ”นRemove small amounts of breast milk. If you need to relieve the pressure, you can hand express some breast milk or pump a bit.
Donโ€™t pump or express too much,to avoid your body from trying to produce more milk to make up for what you just removed.

๐Ÿ”นWean slowly. If youโ€™re too quick to stop breastfeeding, you could end up with too much milk. Slowly wean your child so your body can adjust to the decreased need.

๐Ÿ”ตIf you donโ€™t breastfeed, you can wait out breast milk production. In a matter of days, your body will understand it doesnโ€™t need to produce milk and the supply will dry up. This will stop the engorgement.

๐Ÿ”ตDonโ€™t be tempted to express or pump milk. Youโ€™ll signal to your body that it needs to produce milk, and you may prolong discomfort.

For those who are breastfeeding, treatments for breast engorgement include:

๐Ÿ”นUsing a warm compress, or taking a warm shower to encourage milk let down.

๐Ÿ”นFeeding more regularly, or at least every one to three hours.

๐Ÿ”นBreastfeed for as long as the baby is hungry

๐Ÿ”นMassaging your breasts while nursing.

๐Ÿ”นApplying a cold compress or ice pack to relieve pain and swelling.

๐Ÿ”นAlternating feeding positions to drain milk from all areas of the breast.

๐Ÿ”นAlternating breasts at feedings so your baby empties your supply.

๐Ÿ”นHand expressing or using a pump when you canโ€™t nurse.

๐Ÿ”นAn approved pain medication should bs prescribed by the doctor

๐ŸŸ For those who donโ€™t breastfeed, painful engorgement typically lasts about one to two days. After that period, your breasts may still feel full and heavy, but the discomfort and pain should subside. You can wait throughout this period, or you can use one of the following treatments:

๐Ÿ”ธUsing a cold compress or ice packs to ease swelling and inflammation.

๐Ÿ”ธTaking pain relief medication approved by your doctor.
๐Ÿ”ธWearing a supportive bra that prevents your breasts from moving significantly.

๐Ÿ”ทMiscarriage is when an embryo or fetus dies before the 20th week of pregnancy.

๐Ÿ”ทMiscarriage usually happens early in your pregnancy within the first 3 months.

๐Ÿ”ทIn fact, 10-20% of pregnancies end in miscarriage.

๐Ÿ”ทThe medical term for miscarriage is โ€œspontaneous abortion.

It can be difficult to know exactly why a miscarriage happened, but itโ€™s almost never caused by something the pregnant person did.

๐Ÿ”ทNormal activities like s*x, exercise, working, and taking most medicines do NOT cause a miscarriage.

๐Ÿ”ทMinor injuries, like falling, donโ€™t generally cause a miscarriage either.

Some of the things that are known to cause miscarriages include:

๐Ÿ”ทWhen the fertilized egg has an abnormal number of chromosomes (genes). This happens at random, so you canโ€™t prevent it or cause it to happen.

๐Ÿ”ทCertain illnesses, like severe diabetes, can increase your chances of having a miscarriage.

A very serious infection or a major injury may cause miscarriage.

๐Ÿ”ทLate miscarriages โ€” after 3 months โ€” may be caused by abnormalities in the uterus.

๐Ÿ”ทIf youโ€™ve had more than 2 miscarriages in a row, youโ€™re more likely to have a miscarriage.

๐“๐˜๐๐„๐’ ๐Ž๐… ๐Œ๐ˆ๐’๐‚๐€๐‘๐‘๐ˆ๐€๐†๐„๐’

๐Ÿ”ทThere are several types of miscarriages:

๐Ÿ”น๐“๐ก๐ซ๐ž๐š๐ญ๐ž๐ง๐ž๐ ๐Œ๐ข๐ฌ๐œ๐š๐ซ๐ซ๐ข๐š๐ ๐ž โ€” You have vaginal bleeding and may have mild cramps, but your cervix stays closed. Half of the time, the bleeding stops and your pregnancy goes on normally. The other half of threatened miscarriages become inevitable miscarriages, and end in pregnancy loss.

๐Ÿ”น๐ˆ๐ง๐ž๐ฏ๐ข๐ญ๐š๐›๐ฅ๐ž ๐Œ๐ข๐ฌ๐œ๐š๐ซ๐ซ๐ข๐š๐ ๐ž โ€” You have increasing bleeding, and your cervix opens. If this happens, thereโ€™s no chance for your pregnancy to continue.

Some of the pregnancy tissue comes out of your uterus, and some stays inside. You may need follow-up treatment to remove the remaining tissue.

๐Ÿ”น๐‚๐จ๐ฆ๐ฉ๐ฅ๐ž๐ญ๐ž ๐Œ๐ข๐ฌ๐œ๐š๐ซ๐ซ๐ข๐š๐ ๐ž โ€” All the pregnancy tissue comes out of your uterus. You usually donโ€™t need any extra treatment.

๐Ÿ”น๐Œ๐ข๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ž๐ ๐Œ๐ข๐ฌ๐œ๐š๐ซ๐ซ๐ข๐š๐ ๐ž โ€” You have no cramps or bleeding. But ultrasound shows an embryo without a heartbeat or an empty pregnancy sac without an embryo. Usually the tissue passes on its own, but you may need treatment.

๐Ÿ”ทBut even though miscarriage is common, it can be emotionally difficult. Feelings of grief and loss are normal after losing a pregnancy.

๐Ÿ”ทTreatments for miscarriage include medicines or procedures that are very similar to those used for abortion.

๐Ÿ”ทDuring aspiration, a nurse or doctor puts a thin plastic tube in your uterus and removes the pregnancy tissue usiing gentle suction.

๐Ÿ”ทMiscarriages can be dangerous if theyโ€™re not treated. Call your doctor right away if you have any signs or symptoms of miscarriage.

๐Ÿ”ทSee your doctor if you notice any signs of miscarriages.

UMBILICAL CORD CARE

CloseUp toothpaste is for mouth hygiene NOT FOR UMBILICAL CORD HYGIENE

STOP APPLYING CLOSEUP TOOTHPASTE ON YOUR NEWBORN UMBLICAL CORD.

Close Up toothpaste use on the umbilical cord encourages bacterial growth. It is sticky hence traps anything carried by air and also contains sugar boosting growth of the microorganisms.

Imagine painting your wound with Close Up toothpaste and expecting good/quick wound healing.

Methylated Spirit or chlorhexidine gel is still the ideal for cord care. Use it as often as possible till the cord falls off.

Say No to Vaseline use or use of warm water compress on the umbilical area.

What do/did you use for your newborn Umblical cord care?
