Part 9: Food and Diabetes – The Connection
My people, let’s be practical today. We Nigerians love food well well, rice in the morning, eba in the afternoon, yam at night. On top of that, we wash it down with chilled soft drink. But let’s face it, the body is not a dumping ground. When we overload it with these foods every day, the blood gets flooded with sugar.
Let me give you gist. One uncle I know used to say, “I can’t sleep unless I eat swallow late at night.” Guess what? Today, his doctor told him, “Stop all those late-night swallows.” And the man said, “So what will I eat now?” Imagine waiting until sickness begins to dictate what you can and cannot eat.
My people, wisdom is better than cure. Nobody is saying you should throw swallow away, no! But let’s learn to control portion and balance it with vegetables. Instead of 4 wraps of fufu, why not eat just 1 wrap, but make your soup rich with ugu, okra, or ewedu? That way, your body enjoys the food without suffering the overload.
Here are small tips that can help:
✅ Reduce portion of heavy carbs (rice, yam, eba).
✅ Add plenty vegetables to your meals.
✅ Take water instead of soft drinks.
✅ Don’t eat heavy food late at night, give your body rest.
My people, diabetes no dey start in one day o. It’s from the small small food habits we repeat daily. Let’s make smarter swaps 👇🏽
Instead of 4 wraps of fufu ➝ Take 1 wrap + soup full of veggies (ugu, okra, ewedu).
Instead of Coke or Malt ➝ Drink water or zobo without sugar.
Instead of eating heavy food at 10pm ➝ Take light dinner (moimoi, fruits, or pap).
Instead of big plate of white rice ➝ Mix with beans or take smaller portion + salad.
Small changes = big results. 💚 Don’t wait until sickness begins to tell you what you can eat. Start now and let your food be your medicine, not your enemy.
Remember, food is medicine when taken wisely, but poison when abused. The choice is yours 💚
Show me some love if you're getting value abeg, that's what will let me talk about the next part 😂
