PSORIASIS

INTRODUCTION

Psoriasis is an autoimmune skin condition that causes itchiness and discomfort.

CAUSES

-An over-reactive immune system that creates inflammation in your skin causes psoriasis.

-Psoriasis occurs when skin cells are replaced more quickly than usual. It's not known exactly why this happens, but research suggests it's caused by a problem with the immune system. Your body produces new skin cells in the deepest layer of skin.

SYMPTOMS

A rash or a raised area of thick skin.

The skin on the plaque is discolored.

The plaque is scaly or flaky and sheds easily.

Itchy skin.

Cracked, dry skin.

Skin pain.

Nails that are pitted, cracked or crumbly.

Joint pain.

IS PSORIASIS CONTAGIOUS?

No, psoriasis isn’t contagious. You can’t get psoriasis by coming into contact with another person’s psoriasis skin rash.

COMPLICATIONS OF PSORIASIS

For some people diagnosed with psoriasis, the skin condition causes more than itchiness, scaling skin and skin discoloration. It can lead to swollen joints and arthritis. If you have psoriasis, you may be at higher risk of:

Diabetes.

Obesity.

High cholesterol.

Strokes.

Heart attacks.

TYPES OF PSORIASIS

There are several types of psoriasis, each of which varies in its signs and symptoms:

Plaque psoriasis

Nail psoriasis

Guttate psoriasis

Inverse psoriasis

Pustular psoriasis

Erythrodermic psoriasis.

BURKHOLDERIA CEPACIA

INTRODUCTION

Burkholderia cepacia (B.Cepacia) is an aerobic gram-negative bacillus found in various aquatic environments. B cepacia is an organism of low virulence that can cause pneumonia in immune-compromised patients, especially those with cystic fibrosis(CF). BULRHOLDERIA CEPACIA COMPLEX (BCC) infection can lead to a rapid decline in those with lung problems and strict isolation is necessary.

OPTIMUM TEMPERATURE FOR GROWTH

Bcc are Gram-negative, non-fermenting, non-spore forming bacilli that are motile by means of polar flagella. B. cepacia complex species grow aerobically. The optimal temperature range for growth in the laboratory is 30° to 35°C.

INCUBATION PERIOD

B cepacia is cultured optimally on selective media, such as MacConkey agar supplemented with polymyxin B, incubated in air at 35°C and requires about 48 h to produce visible colonies.

CAUSES

Research has shown that people with CF can get B. cepacia from others who are infected with these bacteria. The germs spread either by direct contact, such as kissing, or indirectly from touching objects with the germs, such as doorknobs.
Some strains of Burkholderia bacteria are spread from person to person or by contamination of disinfectants, including in hospital settings. Good personal hygiene, including frequent hand washing, and infection control measures in hospitals can lower the risk of disease transmission.
cepacia can also be spread to susceptible persons by: Person-to-person contact. Contact with contaminated surfaces.

SYMPTOMS OF BURKHOLDERIA CEPACIA

A cough that produces colorful or bloody mucus.

Fever, chills, and heavy sweating.

A fast heart rate.

Quick, shallow breaths.

Chest pain.

Extreme fatigue.

MANAGEMENT

Co-trimoxazole (trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole) has been a drug of choice. However, in some cases it cannot be administered because of allergic or hypersensitivity reactions, intolerance or resistance.

It's advisable you consult your Doctor.
