January is the month for glaucoma awareness.
What is glaucoma?
Glaucoma is an eye condition that causes blindness. It damages the nerves connecting the eye to the brain.
Here are 8 key things to know about glaucoma:
1. Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness
2. Anyone can develop glaucoma, age does not matter.
3. Glaucoma can only be detected in its early stage through a comprehensive silted eye exam.
4. In the early stage of the condition, there are usually no symptoms. Symptoms only appear in the later stages when Vision loss must have started.
5. Glaucoma damaged the optic nerves. These are like wires/cables which carry visual@information to the brain.
6. Once glaucoma damages the optic nerves, lost vision cannot be restored.
7. High pressures in the eye is a major risk factor for glaucoma.
8. The only clinically proven treatment for glaucoma is to lower the eye pressure with the use of medications and/or surgery in severe cases.
