The rising rate of cancer in the population is alarming. It is the disease that now affects almost one in every five. For every twenty adults who died, four died from cancer.
CAUSES OF CANCER
Cancer comes about when one cell begins to multiply uncontrollably because of the loss of cellular property called ‘contact inhibition’.
Very quickly a group of abnormal cells is formed which in time can grow into a tumour.
Cancerous tumours are described as ‘malignant’, and tend to spread to distant parts of the body as well as invading the tissues in which they arise.
The main reason for the cause of cancer is the destructive molecules called free radicals. Free radicals are a by-product of the metabolic reactions in the body that are responsible for the generation of energy. Free radicals so generated can damage the sensors on the surface of the cell that tell it when to divide [loss of contact inhibition]. This may lead to uncontrolled growth that gets a cancer going. Free radicals may also strike at the control centre of the cell- the DNA causing it to spin out to control.
