As a lady, once you reach 40 without getting married, I advise you to consider having a child. You can explore options like IVF, finding a partner to get pregnant, or adoption. However, I recommend finding a partner to get pregnant, as it's often the most affordable and straightforward option. If you have the financial means, IVF could be a viable choice. Adoption should be your last resort, as it may lead to potential complications in the future, especially with male children. In Igbo culture, a biological male child is entitled to inheritance in their father's household. But that's not the primary reason for having a child. You want someone to care for you in your old age.
Many women make the mistake of investing in relatives or others, hoping they'll care for them later. But the truth is, no one will care for you like your own child will. I know an 87-year-old woman who didn't plan for her old age and is now lonely and unhappy, despite her relatives' support. She longs for companionship, grandchildren, and the comfort of her own children. Don't rely on others; make plans for your future. Your church or community might disapprove, but remember, they won't be there for you in your old age. A reasonable society understands the importance of self-care and planning.
Having a child won't stop a man from marrying you, and a man who truly wants to be with you won't be deterred. Children bring joy and fulfillment in old age. If you're financially stable, consider having multiple children. Trust me, you'll thank me later.
