When you consider that Diabetes is responsible for 3.8 million deaths globally, which is equivalent to the number of people who die from HIV/AIDS, it becomes evident how crippling the disease can be.

Diabetes is a costly disease to manage. The high costs stem from treating the disease itself and its complications. Diabetes management must go beyond focusing on treatment.

Because many people with diabetes don't know the benefits of a healthy diet, or the role dieticians play in diabetes care, they don't have information on how to manage their disease.

There's a great need for diabetes awareness and management to help stop the increasing number of diabetic patients.

At The Nutrition network Africa, we provide nutrition support to Individuals managing nutritional related illnesses from the comfort of their home by providing easy access to Licensed Dietitians across Africa.

People come in all shapes and sizes, colors and shades.

The human body has a tremendous capacity for variation, which is why everyone looks different.

Body image can be a slippery slope for most people.

Almost everyone struggles with body image. Regardless of their actual size or shape, odds are that there’s at least one area of their body that bothers them.

Someone may be happy with how they look, they may feel they need some serious changes, or somewhere in between, but all things being equal the only opinion that should matter is their own.

Some people are “overweight”. This is undeniable.

Over a billion people are believed to be officially obese. From a health perspective, this isn’t ideal, given all the problems that being overweight can lead to.

It is not in your place to pass comments or make jokes about people’s bodies, weight or even health. You never really know people’s struggle.

However, another more indirect but still-harmful consequence of being overweight is the increased risk of “fat shaming”.

Malnutrition is a global problem

2018 Global Nutrition Report reveals malnutrition is unacceptably high and affects every country in the world, but there is also an unprecedented opportunity to end it.

Millions of people are suffering from different forms of malnutrition. In fact, 1.9 billion adults are overweight or obese while 462 million are underweight. Among children, 52 million under-fives are suffering from wasting, where they have a low weight for height.

Healthy food needs to be more accessible and more affordable

Cheap food tends not to be healthy food; we need government policies that make healthy food more available and affordable. We need to see changes in the public sector so that government organisations lead by example and purchase the right food.

Monkey pox is a virus that is transferred to humans from animals with symptoms similar to those seen in smallpox patients and it is clinically less severe. Monkey pox is a disease of worldwide public health significance and Nigeria has been experiencing a significant outbreak since 2017, with over 500 suspected cases and over 200 confirmed cases.

Various animal species have been identified as carriers of monkey pox including a variety of rodents, mice, squirrels and monkeys. Animal-to-human transmission can occur by direct contact with infected animals' blood, body fluids, or skin sores, eating undercooked meat and other animal products from diseased animals.

Close contact with an infected person's mucus, saliva, skin sores, or recently contaminated objects can result in human-to-human transmission.

Transmission can also occur through the placenta from mother to fetus though it is still uncertain whether it can be transmitted through s*x.

The period from infection to onset of symptoms of monkey pox is usually from 6 to 13 days but can range from 5 to 21 days. Severe instances are common in children and are related to the extent of virus exposure and patient current health status.

Monkey pox symptoms lasts for about 2 to 4 weeks and is characterized by fever, intense headache, back pain, muscle aches and lack of energy.

Breastfeeding is key to sustainable development strategies post-pandemic, as it improves nutrition, ensures food security and reduces inequalities between and within countries.

This year, our focus is on strengthening the capacity of actors that have to protect, promote and support breastfeeding across different levels of society.

These actors make up the warm chain of support for breastfeeding, and that includes; governments, health systems, workplaces and communities.

Information, education and empowerment are important factors in strengthening their capacity to provide and sustain breastfeeding-friendly environments for families in the post pandemic world.

HEPATITIS simply means the inflammation of the liver.

Most people have no idea what hepatitis is and this virus is becoming one of the deadliest ‘killers’ of our time.

Today being the 28th of July is being recognized as WORLD HEPATITIS DAY by the World Health Organization.

There are different treatment regimens for the different classifications of Hepatitis but those of importance include antiviral medications, healthy dietary and nutritional habits, avoiding alcohol and in a crucial stage liver transplant may be required.

All these treatments are not 100% effective for recovery in most cases and like the saying goes, ‘Prevention is better than cure’ and to achieve this is to get TESTED and VACCINATED. Early diagnosis also helps to make the treatment more effective.

Theme: Eliminating Harmful Practices Affecting Children: Progress on Policy & Practice since 2013.

On June 16, 1971 more than 20,000 South African students in the township of Soweto took to the streets — demanding to be taught in their own language.

Armed police officers responded by murdering hundreds of protesters.

Now a public holiday in South Africa, referred to as Youth Day, it’s also recognized as International Day of the African Child throughout the world.

The day focuses attention on the barriers African children face in order to receive a quality education.

Let us observe this day together and pay our respects to past students who gave their lives to their community by helping students today reach their goals through scholarships that are provided on the basis of their African Heritage.
