Lagos State Strengthens Healthcare Safety Through Improved Monitoring and Digital Innovation

The Lagos State Health Facility Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFAMAA) has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring safe, quality, and reliable healthcare services for all residents across the state. This is being achieved through strict enforcement of healthcare standards, routine inspections, accreditation of health facilities, and the use of digital technology to curb unqualified medical practices.

This message was shared during a sensitisation campaign and town hall meeting held in Agege Local Government Area. Speaking on behalf of the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Abiola Idowu, the Deputy Director and Health Educator, Mrs. Omonike Oladunni, explained that HEFAMAA now operates a digital monitoring platform designed to make healthcare oversight faster and more transparent. According to her, the platform allows members of the public to verify accredited health facilities, access vital information, and report suspected unethical or illegal practices in the health sector.

Mrs. Oladunni emphasized that these measures are focused on protecting patients and ensuring that residents receive care only from qualified, ethical, and duly accredited healthcare providers. She urged community members and stakeholders to help spread awareness about HEFAMAA’s work and encourage the public to make use of the available reporting channels.

Also addressing participants, the Director of Nursing Services, Mrs. Oluwole Titilope, highlighted the importance of registering healthcare facilities, noting that registration sets minimum operational standards for both public and private health institutions. She further explained the introduction of QR codes as an easy feedback tool, enabling citizens to quickly access facility details and share their healthcare experiences.

Through these initiatives, HEFAMAA continues to strengthen trust in the healthcare system and safeguard the wellbeing of Lagos residents.

Today, HEFAMAA convened a stakeholder’s meeting with key practitioners in the cosmetic and aesthetic industry as part of the IMPACT Project 2025, aimed at reviewing and strengthening standards guiding cosmetic procedure practices in Lagos State. The session brought together dermatologists, aesthetic physicians, cosmetologists, spa operators, and other allied professionals to evaluate existing guidelines and identify gaps that need urgent attention. Discussions focused on improving patient safety, establishing clearer licensing requirements, regulating invasive and non-invasive procedures, and curbing the growing concerns around unqualified providers offering unsafe cosmetic services.

The meeting is a crucial step in HEFAMAA’s ongoing efforts to enhance accountability, promote ethical practice, and protect the public from health risks associated with poorly regulated cosmetic procedures. By collaborating directly with industry experts, HEFAMAA aims to develop a more robust, modern, and enforceable framework that reflects global best practices. The outcomes of the engagement will feed into updated practice standards under the IMPACT Project 2025, ensuring that cosmetic procedures in Lagos State are carried out only by competent, certified, and fully compliant practitioners.

Together for Better Health: HEFAMAA Leads the Fight for Safer Healthcare in Lagos

Across Lagos, thousands of residents rely on hospitals and clinics every day trusting that the care they receive is safe, professional, and reliable. But ensuring that trust isn’t taken for granted requires constant vigilance. That’s where the Lagos State Health Facilities Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFAMAA) comes in.

At a recent community engagement held in Awuwo-Odofin Local Government Area, HEFAMAA reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and improving healthcare delivery across the state. The agency explained how it works tirelessly to ensure that every health facility from small clinics to major hospitals, operates according to proper standards.

Through routine inspections, digital monitoring, and the registration of health facilities, HEFAMAA helps expose fake or unqualified health workers while promoting professionalism and patient safety.

To make healthcare more transparent, the agency has also introduced a digital verification system using QR codes, allowing residents to easily check whether a hospital or clinic is duly accredited. This technology also gives the public a simple way to report unethical practices.

HEFAMAA called on residents to join the mission by spreading awareness and reporting suspicious health centers. Together, the agency believes Lagos can build a safer, more trustworthy healthcare system for all.
