CPR stands for cardiopulmonary resuscitation. It is an emergency life-saving procedure that is done when someone's breathing or heartbeat has stopped. This may happen after a medical emergency, such as an electric shock, heart attack, drowning, or conditions that stops breathing or makes it difficult to breathe.

CPR involves chest compressions for adults between 5cm and 6cm deep and at a rate of at least 100 to 120 per minute. The rescuer should also provide artificial ventilation by either exhaling air into the subject's mouth or nose (mouth-to-mouth resuscitation) or using a device that pushes air into the subject's lungs, this is known as rescue breathing. During rescue breathing, you blow air into a person’s mouth to supply them with vital oxygen.

Rescue breathing can be done alone or as a part of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

CPR alone is unlikely to restart the heart. Its main purpose is to restore the partial flow of oxygenated blood to the brain and heart.
The objective is to delay tissue death and to extend the brief window of opportunity for a successful resuscitation without permanent brain damage.
