SLUDGE FOMATION
Todays teaching aid is a sample of pictures extracted from a customers vehicle which had come in for severe engine oil leakages and mild knocking sound on start up. Little did we know that it was a sign that the vehicle is crying out loud for help.
Ladies and gentlemen that black tar-like substance we see here is known as engine oil sludge. As a vehicle owner, this word sludge should never be treated casually because the end result is usually engine knock/seizure.
It is caused by many factors including
-prolonged service intervals
-substandard oils
-higher engine temps(overheating)
-wrong oil selection in terms of viscosity
-runing engine at extremely lower temps(toa hio thermostart hainanga kazi kenya)
Worn our piston rings.
As your engine runs at extremely high oil temperature it starts to boil. At this point it's molecular structure is compromised, combined with combustion byproducts like soot you already have a recipe for sludge fomation without compromise..
For prolonged service intervals,most affected vehicles are those that owners have been convinced that service interval should be 10000kms or beyond. We don't disapprove this fact but there are so many factors affecting it. (We shall have a full write up on this in our future probono) Once your engine engine has maxed out its potential, the rest is just surviving on bare minimum so be assured of sludge formation. At boosted we stick to 5000km as our service intervals regardless of the oil used.
For substandard oils, its obviously self explanatory.lets jump to low engine temps because you removed the thermostart.
Extremely lower temps way below required operating temp of lubricating oil may cause lubricant to have premature oxidation which turns the oxide into acids that enhance sludge formation.
Worn out piston rings causes burned gasses to escape into the crank case(blow by) in this process, the mixture directly gets into contact with lubricating oil hence

6. Timing belts: every 50,000 to 100,000 km
7. Brake hoses: every 50,000 to 100,000 km
8. Brake pads: every 30,000 to 50,000 km
9. Brake discs: every 50,000 to 100,000 km
10. Shock absorbers: every 50,000 to 100,000 km
11. Brake fluid: every 20,000 to 40,000 km
12. Power steering fluid: every 30,000 to 60,000 km
13. Coolant: every 50,000 to 100,000 km
14. Spark plugs: every 30,000 to 100,000 km
15. Ignition plugs: every 50,000 to 100,000 km

It is important to mention that these kilometers are only a rough guide and that the actual life of each component may vary depending on the vehicle's use and conditions. It is advisable to consult the owner's manual or a mechanic for specific recommendations for your vehicle...
