HOW LONG CAN SOMEONE LIVE WITH CKD ?

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is not an immediate death sentence.
Many people live for YEARS — even decades — with proper care and early treatment.

🔶 The earlier CKD is discovered, the better the outcome
🔶 Controlling blood pressure and diabetes can slow kidney damage
🔶 Healthy eating, exercise, and avoiding harmful drugs help protect the kidneys

🔶 Some people may eventually need dialysis or a kidney transplant
🔶 Regular checkups and lab tests are very important

Many people don’t know they have CKD until it becomes severe because kidney disease can stay silent for a long time.
Don’t ignore signs like:
🔸 Swollen legs
🔸 Foamy urine
🔸 Constant tiredness
🔸 Poor appetite
🔸 Difficulty breathing
Early detection can save kidney function — and save lives.

WHY CKD IS CALLED A “SILENT KILLER”

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is often called a silent killer because many people don’t know they have it until the kidneys are already badly damaged.

Your kidneys can lose up to 90% of their function before major symptoms appear.

Early CKD may have NO warning signs
You may still feel “normal” while damage is happening
Symptoms often appear late, when treatment becomes harder

Possible late signs include:
🔶 Swollen legs or face
🔶 Foamy urine
🔶 Fatigue and weakness
🔶 Loss of appetite
🔶 Difficulty breathing
🔶 High blood pressure

The biggest causes of CKD are:
🔶 Diabetes
🔶 High blood pressure
🔶 Frequent misuse of painkillers (NSAIDs)
🔶 Untreated infections
🔶 Harmful herbal mixtures

Many people discover CKD during routine tests or when kidney failure has already started.
Protect your kidneys:
🔶 Check your blood pressure regularly
🔶 Control blood sugar levels
🔶 Avoid self-medication
🔶 Drink enough water
🔶 Go for kidney function tests if you’re at risk.

Your kidneys work silently every day for you.
Don’t wait for symptoms before checking them.

What Stage Is Your Kidney Disease?

Understanding CKD Stages 1–5
Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) doesn’t happen overnight. It progresses in stages — and many people don’t even know they have it until it becomes serious.
Your kidneys may be silently losing function while you feel completely normal.

Here’s a simple breakdown of the 5 stages of CKD
🔶 Stage 1: Kidney Damage with Normal Function Kidneys still work well, but there may be protein in urine or structural damage. Most people have NO symptoms at this stage.

🔶 Stage 2 – Mild Kidney Damage Kidney function starts dropping slightly. You may still feel normal, which is why routine tests matter.

🔶 Stage 3 – Moderate Kidney Disease Waste begins to build up in the body. Symptoms may start appearing:
▫️Fatigue
▫️Swelling
▫️High blood pressure
▫️Changes in urination

DRUG INTERACTION THAT CAN HARM YOUR KIDNEYS

Not all kidney damage comes from a single drug — sometimes it happens when medications are mixed incorrectly.

Certain drug combinations can overload the kidneys, reduce blood flow, or increase toxic effects in the body.

COUGH SYRUP AND COMBINATION DRUGS: HIDDEN KIDNEY RISKS

Many cough and cold medicines contain several ingredients combined together.
Some products may include:
đź’Š Pain relievers
đź’Š Decongestants
đź’Š Sedatives
đź’Š Antihistamines

Frequent misuse or overdose can place unnecessary stress on the kidneys—especially in people living with diabetes, hypertension, or kidney disease.

Many people also mix multiple medicines without realizing they contain similar ingredients.

Always read medicine labels carefully and avoid unnecessary self-medication.

STEROIDS AND KIDNEY HEALTH: BENEFIT AND RISK

Steroids can be very helpful in treating certain kidney diseases because they reduce inflammation and immune system damage.
But long-term misuse or unsupervised use may lead to:
❌ High blood pressure
❌ Diabetes
❌ Weight gain
❌ Fluid retention
❌ Increased infection risk

These conditions can indirectly affect kidney health over time.

Steroids are powerful medicines that should only be used under medical supervision.

ANTI-MALARIA DRUGS AND THE KIDNEYS: ARE THEY SAFE?

Malaria treatment is common, especially in Nigeria, and many people self-medicate without proper testing.

Most anti-malaria medicines are generally safe when correctly used. However:
🔶 Overdose
🔶 Fake drugs
🔶 Wrong combinations
🔶 Frequent unnecessary use
🔶 Mixing with herbal products

…can increase health risks.
People who already have kidney disease should be extra careful and seek proper medical guidance before treatment.

Proper diagnosis matters. Not every fever is malaria.

WRONG DRUG DOSAGE IN KIDNEY DISEASE: A DANGEROUS MISTAKE

The kidneys help remove many medicines from the body.
When kidney function drops, drugs can remain in the bloodstream longer than expected and build up to dangerous levels.

This may cause:
🔶 Severe side effects
🔶 Excessive drowsiness
🔶 Confusion
🔶 Breathing problems
🔶 Further kidney injury

This is why many medicines require dose adjustment in people with kidney disease.

The same dose that is safe for one person may be dangerous for another with poor kidney function.

Kidney function should always be considered before prescribing certain medications.
