THE HEALTHCARE RIGHT NIGERIANS DON’T KNOW THEY HAVE AND HOW HOSPITALS ARE BREAKING THE LAW EVERY DAY.

Most Nigerians don’t know this, and that ignorance is costing lives:

Since 2014, there has been a powerful law in Nigeria that gives every citizen the right to FREE emergency healthcare and basic medical services.

This law is called:

THE NATIONAL HEALTH ACT (NHA), 2014

Signed into law by President Goodluck Jonathan in October 2014.

And yet, 10 years later, millions of Nigerians still don’t know it exists. Hospitals disregard the law and Ministry of Health embezzles the funds meant for it.

HERE’S WHAT THIS LAW GUARANTEES YOU (AND THEY DON’T WANT YOU TO KNOW)

Under SECTION 20, SECTION 27, and SECTION 29 of the National Health Act:

1. No hospital in Nigeria has the right to reject you during an emergency whether you have money or not.

This means:
-Accident victims
-Pregnant women in labour
-Gunshot victims
-Stroke victims
-Heart attack and asthma patients
-Children in critical condition

MUST be treated immediately whether they have money or not.

It is ILLEGAL for hospitals to demand money before saving a life.

This includes:
-Government hospitals
-Private hospitals
-Clinics
-Mission hospitals
-Specialist centres
-Teaching hospitals
-CHEWs and PHCs

ALL HEALTH FACILITIES are bound by this law.

Yes, private hospitals are also obligated to stabilize emergency patients before talking about money.

This is not advice. This is not a plea.
This is federal law.

2. The Law Also Guarantees Free Essential Healthcare Nationwide

The Act mandates that every Nigerian is entitled to a Basic Minimum Package of Health Services (BMHS), which includes:

-Free immunization
-Free antenatal care
-Free childbirth services
-Free family planning services
-Free treatment for common illnesses at PHCs
-Free care for children under 5
-Free emergency stabilization

These are not promises.
These are legal entitlements you can hold the government ad hospitals accountable for.

Background:
A range of Mid-Upper Arm Circumference (MUAC) Measuring Tapes are available through UNICEF Supply
Division. MUAC tapes are predominately used to measure the upper arm circumference of children but
also that of pregnant women, helping identify malnutrition.
There are different types of MUAC tape available. All are graduated in millimetres and some are colour
coded (red, yellow and green) to indicate the nutritional status of a child or adult. The colour codes and
gradations vary depending on the tape type.
In May 2009, the Word Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF issued a joint statement on WHO child
growth standards and the identification of severe acute malnutrition in infants and children. To reflect
this, a new standard MUAC tape (S0145620 MUAC, Child 11.5 Red/PAC-50) was made available.
Before ordering, you should check if the government in your country has implemented the new WHO
standards, in which case order S0145620. If your government has not implemented the new standards,
order S0145600.
The item description text below has been changed to reflect the adjusted tape cut-off points. MUAC tapes
for adults are also now available through Supply Division warehouse. We have also included the
beneficiary type (child, adult) into the item descriptions.

Old description: MUAC 12.5 measuring tape/PAC-50
This is the previous standard MUAC tape used most often in the field. It has been given a new item
description to reflect the type of beneficiary and red cut-off point. Following the publication of the new
standards it is expected that the item will be slowly replaced by S0145620 (see above).

Malnutrition is the one leading cause of maternal mortality and to ameliorate the maternal mortality, health educating the communities on proper and adequate use of the available resources is the solution; and all these can be attained through the training and deploying of the competent health care personnel in the primary health care centers 💯
