It is hard to stay blind to the pain of those around you especially when there is something you can do about it.
Last year, moved by the despair of our teenage girls at Deaf Technology Foundation, we started a thing. We helped 24 of them address the pain, the trauma they’ve had to walk around with because someone took advantage of their impairment and sexually abused them.
It was a cleansing of the feeling of worthlessness and hopelessness, an intervention to offer them life from a new perspective, open them to a new chapter-which I hope to be a dramatic plot twist in their life story
“I was just staying at home and I didn’t care. So many things have happened that made me lose hope. After all that I have learnt here, I will go back to school and put in my best. I now know that life will come with problems and I can face the problems of life ahead stronger.''
This is just one of the many testimonies that stay close to my heart and it’s the confession and the resolve for me.
It is testimonies like these that push me above the weight of this vision, the awareness of how much is at stake and that there is truly something we can do about it.
Earlier this month, we got a grant from LEAP Africa to expand these trauma healing sessions to secondary schools, starting from school for the deaf Bassa.
Yeah, it's a big one for us!
But, we need your support. The funding we received is not enough to fully cater for the number of girls that we'll be working with, especially that we’d have to feed them through the days. We need your support to execute this program, to light up hope in the hearts of these girls and keep these stories of transformation coming.
We are open to sponsorship, partnership and every form of support at all in cash and kind. Let’s make Deaf Girls ARISE 2.0 a reality!
