KSCHMA, NHIA, SPHCMB Sustain Momentum on Day Seven of Statewide PHC Reaccreditation Exercise

The Kano State Contributory Healthcare Management Agency (KSCHMA), in collaboration with the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) and the Kano State Primary Health Care Management Board (SPHCMB), has sustained strong implementation momentum on Day Seven of the ongoing statewide Reaccreditation and Data Validation exercise across Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) in Kano State.

Field teams remain actively deployed across multiple Local Government Areas, conducting systematic assessments to ensure compliance with established standards and to strengthen healthcare service delivery under the Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF).

The exercise continues to evaluate critical service components, including infrastructure, availability of skilled health personnel, essential medicines and equipment, quality of care, and data integrity. In addition, real-time mentorship is being provided to PHC In-Charges to improve patient management, documentation practices, and data reporting systems.

Emerging findings indicate gradual improvements in facility-level compliance and operational efficiency. However, notable gaps persist, particularly in human resource capacity, including shortages of doctors and skilled birth attendants, which continue to affect service delivery in some facilities.

Access to healthcare remains a challenge in certain communities, as distance to facilities limits utilization by enrollees. Similarly, referral systems are constrained by the long distances between primary and secondary healthcare facilities, affecting timely access to advanced care.

The ongoing data validation process is strengthening the credibility of health information, ensuring that planning and interventions are guided by accurate and reliable data.

The Executive Secretary of KSCHMA, Dr. Rahila Aliyu Muktar, noted that the progress recorded reflects the effectiveness of inter-agency collaboration and a shared commitment to improving healthcare outcomes across the state.

As the exercise approaches its final phase, findings from the field are expected to inform targeted interventions aimed at addressing identified gaps, strengthening referral systems, and improving equitable access to quality healthcare services.

KSCHMA, NHIA, and SPHCMB reaffirm their commitment to building a resilient, inclusive, and efficient healthcare system for all residents of Kano State.

Restoring Hope Through Kano First: KSCHMA Rapid Response Team Secures Urgent Specialist Care for Two Orthopedic Patients

In furtherance of the Kano State Government’s commitment to accessible and responsive healthcare delivery, the Kano State Contributory Healthcare Management Agency (KSCHMA), through its Rapid Response Team (RRT), has facilitated specialist orthopedic referrals for two vulnerable patients requiring urgent medical intervention.

The interventions were carried out under the directive of the Executive Secretary of KSCHMA, Dr Rahila Aliyu Muktar, who directed the immediate referral and coordination of care for the patients at Sir Muhammad Sunusi Specialist Hospital.

One of the patients, Yusuf Arafat, was diagnosed with a segmental femoral fracture following clinical evaluation and was subsequently referred for comprehensive orthopaedic assessment, laboratory investigations, and specialist surgical management aimed at stabilising the injury and preventing further complications.

Similarly, Khadija Adam was referred for advanced orthopaedic evaluation and treatment following medical findings indicating multiple complex bone injuries requiring specialist care and close medical supervision.

The Rapid Response Team immediately coordinated the referral process to ensure timely access to appropriate medical attention and continuity of care for both patients.

Speaking on the intervention, Dr Rahila Aliyu Muktar reaffirmed KSCHMA’s commitment to ensuring that vulnerable residents receive prompt and quality healthcare services, particularly during emergencies and trauma-related cases.

She noted that the Agency’s Rapid Response framework aligns with the “Kano First” development agenda of His Excellency Abba Kabir Yusuf, which prioritises the welfare, health, and social protection of Kano citizens through people-centred governance and strengthened healthcare systems.

According to the Executive Secretary, the present administration remains committed to removing barriers to healthcare access by strengthening referral coordination, expanding emergency medical response, and ensuring that patients requiring specialised treatment are connected to appropriate healthcare facilities without delay.

The intervention further reflects KSCHMA’s dedication to equitable healthcare delivery and sustained patient follow-up in line with the State Government’s broader healthcare reform initiatives.

KSCHMA will continue to monitor the progress of both patients to ensure improved treatment outcomes and effective medical support.

Driving Quality and Accountability: KSCHMA, NHIA, SPHCMB Advance Statewide PHC Reaccreditation on Day Six

The Kano State Contributory Healthcare Management Agency (KSCHMA), in collaboration with the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) and the Kano State Primary Health Care Management Board (SPHCMB), has recorded sustained progress on Day Six of the ongoing statewide Reaccreditation and Data Validation exercise across Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) in Kano State.

The exercise, now in its advanced phase, continues to drive improvements in healthcare quality, operational accountability, and data integrity across facilities under the Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF).

Field teams deployed across multiple Local Government Areas are conducting detailed assessments of healthcare facilities, focusing on infrastructure readiness, availability of qualified personnel, essential drugs and equipment, service delivery standards, and compliance with national guidelines. The exercise is also reinforcing data validation processes to ensure that enrollee records and service data accurately reflect realities at the facility level.

A key feature of the ongoing exercise remains the provision of hands-on mentorship to PHC In-Charges. Assessment teams are supporting facility managers with practical guidance on clinical protocols, health records management, data reporting accuracy, and efficient coordination of services. This approach continues to strengthen capacity at the facility level while promoting a culture of continuous improvement and accountability.

Emerging observations from the field indicate gradual improvements in compliance and documentation across several facilities. However, critical gaps persist, particularly in human resource capacity, with shortages of skilled health workers affecting optimal service delivery in some areas.

Access to healthcare services remains a concern in hard-to-reach communities, where distance to facilities continues to limit enrollee utilization. Additionally, referral systems are still challenged by the geographical distance between primary and secondary healthcare facilities, impacting timely access to specialized care.

The ongoing validation of data is enhancing transparency and providing a credible evidence base for strategic decision-making, resource allocation, and targeted interventions aimed at strengthening the healthcare system.

As the exercise moves toward completion, findings from the field will inform strategic actions to address identified gaps, enhance service delivery, and improve access to quality healthcare services for all residents.

KSCHMA, NHIA, and SPHCMB reaffirm their commitment to building a responsive, inclusive, and resilient healthcare system that meets the needs of the people.

Midpoint Milestone: KSCHMA, NHIA, SPHCMB Surpass 200 PHCs in Reaccreditation Drive, Strengthen Quality Assurance and Mentorship Across Kano

The Kano State Contributory Healthcare Management Agency (KSCHMA), in collaboration with the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) and the Kano State Primary Health Care Management Board (SPHCMB), has reached a significant midpoint milestone in the ongoing statewide Reaccreditation and Data Validation exercise across Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) in Kano State.

At Day Five of the 10-day exercise, assessment teams have successfully covered over 200 PHCs across multiple Local Government Areas, reinforcing the state’s commitment to strengthening primary healthcare delivery and ensuring compliance with standards under the Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF).

The exercise combines comprehensive facility assessments with real-time data validation and targeted mentorship. Teams are evaluating critical service delivery components, including infrastructure, availability of skilled health personnel, essential medicines and equipment, data management systems, and the functionality of referral mechanisms.

In addition to assessment, on-the-spot mentorship is being provided to PHC In-Charges, focusing on patient care protocols, accurate record-keeping, data integrity, and effective service coordination. This integrated approach is not only identifying systemic and operational gaps but also equipping frontline health managers with practical tools to improve performance immediately.

Preliminary findings indicate persistent challenges in human resource capacity, particularly shortages of doctors and skilled birth attendants in some facilities, which continue to impact service quality and coverage. Access to healthcare remains constrained in hard-to-reach communities, where distance to facilities limits utilization by enrollees.

Furthermore, referral systems are affected by the long distances between primary and secondary healthcare facilities, hindering timely access to advanced care. The ongoing data validation process is, however, strengthening the credibility of healthcare records and providing a reliable foundation for evidence-based planning and intervention.

As the exercise progresses, insights generated from the field are expected to inform targeted reforms aimed at strengthening workforce capacity, improving referral systems, enhancing community sensitisation, and expanding access to quality healthcare services across the state.

KSCHMA, NHIA, and SPHCMB reaffirm their collective commitment to building a resilient, efficient, and inclusive healthcare system that guarantees equitable access to affordable and quality services for all.

Driving Quality and Accountability: KSCHMA, NHIA, SPHCMB Sustain Momentum in Statewide Reaccreditation Exercise

The Kano State Contributory Healthcare Management Agency (KSCHMA), in collaboration with the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) and the State Primary Healthcare Management Board (SPHCMB), has successfully advanced to Day Four of the ongoing statewide Reaccreditation and Data Validation exercise across Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) in Kano State.

The exercise continues to gain traction, with assessment teams systematically covering additional Local Government Areas to ensure that healthcare facilities meet required standards for service delivery under the Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF) and other health financing mechanisms.

Day Four activities focused on comprehensive facility assessments, including evaluation of infrastructure, availability of essential commodities, adequacy of skilled health personnel, service delivery efficiency, and data management systems. The teams also continued detailed data validation to verify service records, utilization trends, and operational performance.

Emerging observations reinforce earlier findings, highlighting persistent gaps in human resource capacity, particularly shortages of doctors and skilled birth attendants, which continue to affect the depth and quality of healthcare services in some facilities.

In addition, access-related challenges remain evident, as distance continues to limit service utilization among enrollees in hard-to-reach areas. This is further compounded by constraints in referral systems, where the geographical distance to secondary healthcare facilities affects timely and efficient patient transfers.

The exercise is also providing valuable insights into facility-level coordination, record-keeping practices, and community engagement, all of which are critical to strengthening accountability and improving overall health system performance.

As the exercise progresses, findings from the field are expected to guide targeted interventions aimed at improving service readiness, enhancing workforce capacity, strengthening referral linkages, and increasing community awareness and utilisation of healthcare services.

KSCHMA, NHIA, and SPHCMB reaffirm their collective commitment to building a resilient, responsive, and inclusive primary healthcare system that delivers quality and affordable services to all residents of Kano State.

KSCHMA Executive Secretary Conducts On-the-Spot Assessment at Pre-Eclampsia Unit, Reinforces Commitment to Maternal Health Intervention

The Executive Secretary of the Kano State Contributory Healthcare Management Agency (KSCHMA), Dr. Rahila Aliyu Muktar, IION, has conducted an on-the-spot assessment visit to the Pre-Eclampsia Unit at Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen maternal and emergency healthcare services across the state.

The visit underscores the Agency’s proactive approach to addressing critical maternal health challenges, particularly life-threatening conditions such as Pre-eclampsia, which remains a leading cause of maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality if not promptly managed.

During the assessment, the Executive Secretary engaged directly with healthcare providers and patients, evaluating the quality of care, availability of essential drugs, response time, and the overall effectiveness of clinical interventions within the unit. She commended the dedication of medical personnel while emphasizing the need for sustained support, capacity strengthening, and strict adherence to clinical protocols.

Dr. Muktar reaffirmed KSCHMA’s commitment to ensuring that enrolled beneficiaries—particularly pregnant women—have access to timely, quality, and affordable healthcare services without financial hardship. She noted that the Agency’s strategic interventions are aligned with the broader goal of reducing maternal mortality and improving health outcomes across Kano State.

She further emphasized that continuous monitoring, strengthened stakeholder collaboration, and targeted investments in specialised units such as the Pre-Eclampsia Unit are critical to advancing Universal Health Coverage and safeguarding the lives of mothers and newborns.

The visit also provided an opportunity to identify operational gaps and reinforce the referral system to ensure seamless access to secondary care, especially for high-risk pregnancies.

KSCHMA remains steadfast in its mandate to deliver inclusive, equitable, and responsive healthcare services, particularly for vulnerable populations, in line with the health sector reform agenda of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.

The Kano State Contributory Healthcare Management Agency (KSCHMA), under the leadership of its Executive Secretary, Dr. Rahila Aliyu Muktar, has conferred an Award of Excellence on His Excellency, in recognition of his unwavering commitment to workers welfare and inclusive healthcare delivery in Kano State.

The award, titled “Champion of Workers Progress,” was presented during the 2026 Workers Day celebration at the Sani Abacha Indoor Stadium.

The recognition underscores the impact of the Governor’s AbbaCare Programme, a flagship initiative providing free medication and comprehensive care for individuals living with Sickle Cell Anaemia. The programme has significantly reduced financial hardship for beneficiaries while improving health outcomes across the state.

In her remarks, Dr. Rahila Aliyu Muktar highlighted that under her stewardship, the programme has recorded notable expansion and measurable impact. She noted that AbbaCare has expanded service coverage across multiple healthcare facilities, improved the availability of essential medications, and strengthened care coordination for beneficiaries.

She further emphasized that the initiative has contributed to reduced crisis episodes, fewer hospital admissions, and a marked decline in out-of-pocket expenditure among affected families. Increased public awareness and community engagement have also driven higher enrolment and earlier access to care.

Bridging Access Gaps: KSCHMA, NHIA, SPHCMB Advance Reaccreditation as Distance and Referral Challenges Shape Day Three Findings

The Kano State Contributory Healthcare Management Agency (KSCHMA), in collaboration with the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) and the State Primary Healthcare Management Board (SPHCMB), has progressed to Day Three of the ongoing statewide Reaccreditation and Data Validation exercise across Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) in Kano State.

The exercise continues to record steady progress, with teams deployed across multiple Local Government Areas to assess facility performance and ensure compliance with established standards under the Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF).

Assessments conducted during the day focused on key indicators, including infrastructure, availability of skilled health personnel, service delivery capacity, data integrity, and the effectiveness of referral systems.

Findings indicate that while many facilities remain operational and committed to delivering essential healthcare services, distance to healthcare facilities remains a significant barrier for enrollees, particularly in hard-to-reach communities, thereby limiting timely access to care.

Furthermore, referral systems are being constrained by the long distances between secondary healthcare facilities and these communities, affecting the efficiency of patient transfers and access to higher-level care when needed.

The teams also continued the data validation process to ensure the accuracy of facility records, service utilisation data, and overall operational readiness, reinforcing accountability and informed decision-making within the healthcare system.

These findings, alongside previously identified gaps in human resources—including shortages of doctors and skilled birth attendants—and community sensitisation, highlight priority areas for targeted interventions aimed at strengthening primary healthcare delivery across the state.

The ongoing exercise remains a critical component of Kano State’s broader commitment to improving healthcare access, quality, and equity for all residents.

KSCHMA, NHIA, and SPHCMB reaffirm their shared commitment to addressing identified gaps and ensuring that accredited facilities are well-positioned to deliver efficient, accessible, and people-centred healthcare services.

Statewide Health Reform Gains Momentum: KSCHMA, NHIA, SPHCMB Assess 99 PHCs Across 9 LGAs in Ongoing Reaccreditation Drive

The Kano State Contributory Healthcare Management Agency (KSCHMA), in collaboration with the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) and the State Primary Healthcare Management Board (SPHCMB), has recorded significant progress as the ongoing statewide Reaccreditation and Data Validation exercise enters Day Two.
So far, a total of 99 Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) across 9 Local Government Areas have been successfully assessed, demonstrating strong momentum in the implementation of the exercise across Kano State.

The field teams conducted comprehensive assessments focusing on infrastructure, availability of skilled health personnel, service delivery capacity, data integrity, referral systems, and compliance with standards under the Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF).

Findings from the exercise indicate that while many facilities are operational and delivering essential healthcare services, critical gaps persist. These include shortages of doctors and skilled birth attendants, which continue to limit the capacity of some facilities to provide comprehensive care.

Assessment of referral systems revealed that although some facilities maintain functional linkages, gaps in structured and consistent referrals were observed in others, affecting effective patient management across levels of care.

Additionally, it was observed that some enrollees were not adequately sensitized by Ward Development Committees (WDCs) regarding their enrollment status, resulting in low utilization of available healthcare services.

The ongoing data validation component is ensuring the accuracy of facility records, service utilization data, and operational readiness, reinforcing accountability and quality assurance within the system.

The exercise continues to provide critical insights that will guide targeted interventions aimed at strengthening primary healthcare delivery and improving access to quality, affordable services across Kano State.

KSCHMA, NHIA, and SPHCMB reaffirm their commitment to transparency, system strengthening, and the delivery of people-centered healthcare services.
