๐ŸฆทSaliva is a naturally occurring substance in our body that keeps the mouth, esophagus and digestive tract clean.

๐ŸฆทThink of it as engine oil for your mouth and digestive system.

๐ŸฆทBreaking your fast in the morning regenerates saliva so that the digestive system can continue to do its job.

๐ŸฆทSkipping breakfast brings this entire process to a halt, introducing certain compounds in your mouth that not only lead to dryness but also bad breath.

FLUOROSIS is a condition that results to white or brown speckles on the teeth. It's usually caused by over exposure to flouride at the early stage of life, when the permanent teeth are developing. It's a cosmetic concern but then not harmful to the teeth.
A child can develop fluorosis any time during the years when teeth are beginning to form (birth to 8 years) if they are exposed to high levels of fluoride.
Excess fluoride may be consumed through toothpaste, drinking water, and fortified foods. Low levels of fluoride have been shown to help prevent cavities and are often recommended as a preventative measure for dental health in children and adults. Excess fluoride can alter the appearance of tooth enamel in children whose permanent teeth haven't come in yet and this can continue even when the permanent teeth is fully formed.
We have different forms of fluorosis which includes: mild, moderate and severe
Management can include
Teeth whitening
Veneers
Crowning
Composite restorations and
Micro/macro abrasion.
The treatment need depends on the severity of an individuals case .

HALITOSIS (BAD BREATH)

What is halitosis?

Halitosis is the medical term for bad breath. Everyone gets bad breath from time to time โ€” especially after eating garlic, onions or other strong foods. But bad breath that doesnโ€™t go away (chronic halitosis) could mean you have an oral health issue or a condition thatโ€™s affecting another part of your body.

Halitosis is a symptom of many different conditions. In other words, itโ€™s like a warning message from your body. Finding the root cause of halitosis is the first step in treating the issue.

How common is halitosis?

Halitosis is a widespread condition, affecting approximately 1 out of 4 people in Nigeria. One research study, which combined the findings of 13 medical journal articles, found that halitosis affects about 31.8% of the world's population.

What are the symptoms of halitosis?

The main halitosis symptom is foul-smelling breath that doesnโ€™t go away. The odour may be strong enough for other people to notice.

What is the most common cause of bad breath?

The most common cause of halitosis is poor oral hygiene. Without proper oral hygiene โ€” like brushing, flossing and routine dental cleanings โ€” harmful bacteria invade your mouth and multiply out of control. This can lead to several oral health issues like halitosis, cavities and gum disease.

What are other causes of halitosis?

While poor oral hygiene is the most common cause of halitosis, itโ€™s not the only one. There are several other conditions that can cause bad breath, including:

โ€ข Dry mouth: Saliva helps to wash your mouth, so if your body isnโ€™t making enough saliva, it can lead to halitosis. Smoking can cause dry mouth, and it also increases your risk for gum disease. Additionally, certain medications can cause dry mouth.

โ€ข Head and neck cancers: Symptoms of oral or oropharyngeal cancer (your oropharynx is between your nose and mouth) include sores that donโ€™t heal, mouth pain, difficulty swallowing, a lump in your neck and unexplained weight loss.

Dental caries (tooth decay) is a major oral health problem in most industrialized countries, affecting 60โ€“90% of schoolchildren and the vast majority of adults.

The early manifestation of the caries process is a small patch of demineralized (softened) enamel at the tooth surface, often hidden from sight in the fissures (grooves) of teeth or in between the teeth. The destruction spreads into the softer, sensitive part of the tooth beneath the enamel (dentine). The weakened enamel then collapses to form a cavity and the tooth is progressively destroyed. Caries can also attack the roots of teeth should they become exposed to gum recession. This is more common in older adults.

Causes of Dental Caries
Poor oral hygiene
Constant consumption of sugar
Drug or alcohol abuse
Lack of regular dental checkups
Decreased saliva flow, causing dry mouth
Bad nutrition
High levels of caries in the mouth
Damage to the tooth enamel
Revealed root surfaces of the teeth
Orthodontic treatment combined with poor oral hygiene

Dental caries are mostly caused by the action of acids on the enamel surface. The acid is produced when sugars (mainly sucrose) in foods or drinks react with bacteria present in the dental biofilm (plaque) on the tooth surface. The acid produced leads to a loss of calcium and phosphate from the enamel; this process is called demineralization.

Reduce Frequent Consumption of Sugars
There is overwhelming evidence that frequent consumption of sugars is associated with caries. Advice should be aimed at limiting the frequency of sugar intake. Studies have shown that sugar consumption remains a moderate risk factor for caries even when populations have adequate exposure to fluoride and that exposure to fluoride coupled with a reduction of sugar intake has an additive effect on caries reduction.

Foods and drinks containing โ€œfree sugarsโ€ (i.e., sugars that have been added to food plus sugars naturally present in honey, fruit juices, and syrup) should be recognized and the f
