Incorporating Mental Health in Learning

We aim to ensure that children develop well mentally. Mental health in children has been greatly underestimated, with the introduction of developmental screening in hospitals in Nigeria; children have a better chance of developing well both physically and mentally. This routine practice will greatly enrich and enhance their lives so that they can excel to their full potential. Having a sound mind means functioning at your full capacity, because your mind is you. You are exceptional from the next human being because of your mind. Your mind determines who you are, your thinking, your ability to do well in your life endeavours and most importantly your emotions. Therefore it is imperative that you keep your mind healthy at all times. Developmental Surveillance monitors your child's development by making sure that their mind is kept healthy

Some behaviours people quickly label as “stubbornness” may actually be a child trying to communicate something deeper.

A child may not yet have the words to explain their feelings, discomfort, confusion, or sensory overload. What looks like defiance can sometimes be frustration, anxiety, or a developmental challenge that needs understanding—not punishment.

This is where the right support matters. Through Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy, we focus on understanding behaviour, teaching communication, and helping children develop skills that allow them to express themselves in healthier ways.

When we pause to observe, listen, and support instead of judge, we give children the chance to grow with confidence and dignity.
If you’re noticing behaviours in your child that you don’t fully understand, early guidance can make a big difference.

Send us a DM or click the link in our bio to learn how ABA therapy can support your child’s development.

Today, we celebrate your impact. We see you. We appreciate you. And we honor the difference you make.

Many parents ask: What exactly is ABA therapy, and is it recognised in Nigeria?

Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) is a science-based approach used to help children develop important life skills. It is commonly used to support children with autism, developmental delays, learning difficulties, and communication challenges.

ABA focuses on teaching skills that help children succeed in everyday life, such as communication, social interaction, learning, and independence. It also helps reduce behaviours that may make learning more difficult.

The process usually starts with understanding a child’s strengths and needs, then creating a personalised programme. Therapists use positive reinforcement and structured teaching to help children learn step by step while carefully tracking progress.

ABA is practised in Nigeria in early intervention centres, special schools, inclusive schools, and home-based programmes. While there isn’t a specific government licensing law yet, ABA follows international professional standards and is widely recognised as one of the most effective supports for children with autism.

Most importantly, every child has the right to education, development, and support suited to their needs. Parents also have the right to seek early intervention and choose the services that best support their child.

If you would like to understand how ABA therapy can support your child, feel free to send us a message.

Happy New Month

A new month is here — and with it comes fresh opportunities, renewed hope, and new milestones waiting to be celebrated.

Every step forward counts. Every new word, every improved skill, every calmer moment matters. With patience, structure, and lots of love, our children continue to grow in their own unique and beautiful way.

This month, let’s shift our focus.
Not on perfection.
Not on comparison.
But on progress — steady, meaningful progress.

Here’s to a month filled with growth, small wins, and proud moments. We celebrate them all.

Your child was denied admission.
Or asked to withdraw.
Or subtly pushed out because “they cannot cope.”

What should you do in the first 48 hours?
First, pause. Do not react emotionally — respond strategically.

Ask the school to put their decision in writing. Verbal conversations disappear. Written records protect your child.

Document everything. Save emails, letters, screenshots, voice notes, medical reports, assessment results. Keep dates and names. Evidence matters.

Next, reference the law. The Child Rights Act and the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities Act exist to protect your child’s dignity, access to education, and equal opportunity.

Then seek guidance before escalating. Not every situation requires the same route. Some cases belong before the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities. Others should go to the Lagos State Ministry of Education, the National Human Rights Commission, or in urgent cases, the Nigeria Police Force.

Silence protects systems. Documentation protects children.

If your child has been excluded, denied support, or treated unfairly, do not navigate it alone. Send us a direct message today. Let us help you choose the strongest, safest reporting route and protect your child’s right to belong.

When a child with a disability is denied admission, excluded, neglected, or treated unfairly, it is not just unfortunate — it is a violation. Navigating what to do next can feel overwhelming.

Mrs. Helen Obiageli Oshikoya is not just an advocate — she is a bridge between behavioral science and the law. As a mental health professional, behavioral analyst, legal practitioner, and CEO of Nobelova Gradani Psycho Educational Services, she leads the charge for early childhood development and neurodiverse inclusion across Africa.

She understands ABA.
She understands legal enforcement.
And she understands the emotional weight parents carry.

From reporting to the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities, escalating matters to the Lagos State Ministry of Education, petitioning the National Human Rights Commission, or taking urgent action through the Nigeria Police Force — she helps families move with clarity and strategy.

If your child has been denied support, excluded, or harmed, do not stay silent.

Send a DM today. Because inclusion is not a favor — it is a right.

A child’s disability should never lead to discrimination, exclusion, or abuse. If your child is denied school admission, forced to withdraw, refused support, or treated unfairly — you have the right to report and seek protection.

Here’s where to take action in Nigeria:

1. Disability-based discrimination (denial of access, lack of reasonable accommodation, violations of the Disabilities Act)? Report to the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities. They are the primary authority for disability rights complaints.

2. School-related exclusion or policy violations? Escalate to your State Ministry of Education, such as the Lagos State Ministry of Education. Ministries can investigate and sanction schools.

3. Emotional abuse, neglect, or unsafe environments? Contact the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs or your State’s Child Protection Unit.

4. Human rights breaches or government inaction? Petition the National Human Rights Commission.

5.Criminal abuse, threats, or violence? Report immediately to the Nigeria Police Force (Child Protection Desk).

Important: Document everything. Submit written complaints. Reference the Child Rights Act and Disabilities Act. Always act in the best interest of the child.

If you need help drafting a formal complaint or choosing the strongest reporting route, send us a DM. Advocacy is part of quality ABA care.

Parenting is not always easy — and it is not always strong and confident either. Sometimes, it’s vulnerable.

“The Vulnerable Parent” shines a light on the real side of parenting — the quiet worries, the tough decisions, the moments of doubt, and the deep love that keeps parents going every single day. Behind every thriving child is a parent doing their best, even when they feel unsure or overwhelmed.

Vulnerability does not mean weakness. It means you care. It means you are trying your best . It means you are human.

Let us create a space for honest conversations about the realities parents face and the kind of support families truly need.

Watch, reflect, and join the conversation. Share this with a parent who needs encouragement today — and tell us in the comments, what does vulnerable parenting mean to you?
