It is possible that you have witnessed or heard of a midwife applying firm pressure to a laboring woman's abdomen to assist in the delivery process.
This technique is referred to as fundal pressure. However, it is essential to acknowledge that fundal pressure is not a standard or recommended practice in most guidelines. Its application is limited to rare, emergency situations, and even then, it must be used with extreme caution.
The improper or excessive use of fundal pressure can lead to severe complications, including uterine rupture, perineal tears, injury to the baby's shoulder, and trauma to the mother or baby.
Some women have shared their experiences, stating that fundal pressure made their labor more painful or frightening. In reality, proper positioning, breathing, and skilled support are far safer and more effective ways to facilitate labor progression. If the baby is truly stuck, alternative options, such as assisted delivery with vacuum or forceps or a C-section, are available. Childbirth is already a difficult experience.
