Hey Daddies and Mummies …
Have you wondered why your child is not doing well in school??
Or why your child seems to be learning at a slow pace compared to his mates ??
Or why a child has short attention span or no interest in learning??

Studies have shown that about 30% of learning disorders are attributed to undiagnosed/uncorrected refractive errors. Most children with refractive errors may never complain of inability or difficulty in seeing because they have no prior knowledge of what good vision should be , reason every guardian should ensure regular eye check up for their child to ensure optimal vision and adequate visual development for their child.

Visit us at Royalty Eye clinic now for your child's visual assessment/examination..

HOW DO I KNOW IF I CAN USE CONTACT LENSES?

Well, there are really no special candidates for contact lens use. In fact, virtually everyone can use contact lenses including children. It depends on your hygiene, health consciousness, and adherence to medical instructions.

It's important to talk to your doctor about your contact lens options as there are different types of contact lenses. A suitable contact lens is one that is comfortable and clear.

However, there are cases where contact lens use is not advised. These include cases of:

Eye inflammation.
Eye injury.
Infections.
Allergic conditions

In any of these conditions it's advised you discontinue contact lens use.

What is the root cause of diabetic retinopathy?

Diabetic retinopathy is a condition caused by high blood sugar levels associated with diabetes. Excess sugar in your blood can lead to damage in your retina, which is the part of your eye that detects light and transmits information to your brain.

Diabetes causes damage to blood arteries throughout the body. The increase in blood sugar clogs tiny blood vessels in the retina which makes them leak fluid (haemorrhage). In order to compensate for the blocked blood vessels, your eyes produce new blood vessels that do not function properly. These developing blood arteries also leak easily..

Is it possible that I have diabetic retinopathy?

Diabetic retinopathy can affect everyone with diabetes, regardless of the kind of diabetes they have. This includes persons with type 1, type 2, and gestational diabetes (a type of diabetes that can develop during pregnancy).

The length of time you have diabetes raises your risk. Over the course of their lives, more than half of all diabetics will acquire diabetic retinopathy. The good news is that by controlling your diabetes, you can minimize your chance of developing diabetic retinopathy. Managing your diabetes is essential.

If you have diabetes, it is extremely vital that you get frequent eye examinations done. If you do get diabetic retinopathy, getting treatment as soon as possible can stop the damage and keep you from going blind.

Can Eye Exercises Improve Vision?

Eye exercises can be used to improve the eye muscles and relieve eyestrain. While eye exercises may be useful in some cases, it is important to note that it cannot cure refractive errors such as long and short sightedness.

Eye exercises are effective in improving conditions such as amblyopia (lazy eyes) in children. They can also help relieve strain from computers.

It's important you talk to your doctor if you're experiencing constant eyestrain. There are routine eye exercises that you can engage in to boost your eye muscles. However, you must understand that exercises do not replace lenses.

Colorblindness

Colorblindness is a condition where one cannot distinguish between colors particularly red and green. This is because the cells (cone cells) responsible for color vision are absent, or in some cases, deficient.

Color blindness is more common in men than in women. This is because it is an X-linked trait and since women have more than one X-chromosome, the other one may have functional color vision. However, men have just one X-chromosome, so if that one is deficient, the man would be colorblind.

When it's at its worst, you can only see in grayscale (black and white), but this is uncommon. Most colorblind individuals were born with it, however, colorblindness has also been linked to the use of certain drugs or acquired conditions.

In order to diagnose color blindness the doctor carries out a simple test called the Ishihara test. It’s important to note that colorblindness is untreatable. However, individuals who suffer from color blindness can benefit from the use of certain lenses which helps to distinguish colors.

Topic: Age related Vision Changes

It is common knowledge that physical strength fades with age. Not surprisingly, our eyes also age, perhaps even faster after the age of 60.

Age-related eye changes like cataracts and presbyopia (loss of elasticity of the lens of the eye) are perfectly normal and do not indicate the presence of a disease. Cataracts and presbyopia are common age related diseases that can be easily fixed.

However, there are also a lot of persons out there who may develop age-related diseases such as glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, diabetoc/hypertensive retinopathy.

Onset Of Age-Related Vision Changes

The age of 40 is a common trigger. You may start having trouble focusing on close objects. It's normal. Presbyopia is the gradual loss of focusing ability (accommodation) due to the loss of your lens’ flexibility. This is caused by age and can be easily corrected by the use of reading glasses.

At the age of 65> the lens gradually loses its clarity and consequently becomes opaque. This condition is known as cataract. Cataract is a common phenomenon, and if you live long enough you are bound to experience it. Unlike presbyopia, cataract can only be treated by surgery. However, a cataract surgery is not something to be afraid of as vision is restored once the opaque lens is removed.

It is important you discuss your surgery options with your doctor. Your doctor is in the best position to advise you on the best step to take.

Climate Change And Your Vision

Seasonal changes can aggravate allergies and cause swollen, red eyes. Pollutants in the air can cause a number of eye issues, including chronic dry eye syndrome. Climate change has the potential to exacerbate these environmental eye issues. Warm, dry weather, for example, could contribute to an upsurge in forest fires. Forest fires release a large amount of natural toxins into the air, which have a major impact on the eyes of those who are close by.

Climate change, on the other hand, poses a significantly greater hazard to eye health than dry eye and allergies.

The World Health Organization (WHO) discovered in a 2003 study that ozone depletion is linked to a number of "ocular diseases." The development of cataracts is the most common of these problems. (Ultraviolet (UV) radiation overexposure is thought to be the direct cause of around 20% of cataract occurrences.) As a result, unchecked climate change that causes further ozone layer depletion could result in a considerable increase in the incidence of cataracts.

UV radiation overexposure can also cause macular degeneration, corneal cancer, photokeratitis, photoconjunctivitis, and pterygium, to name a few visual illnesses.

As we observe the changes brought about by climate change, it's important for us to take protective measures. Use your glasses for sun and light protection. And in case of allergies and other eye diseases, it's important to always follow your doctor's advise.

Kids Vision: Eye health tips during pregnancy

There are certain lifestyle decisions that can help babies in the womb as regards their vision. It is important that as a mother, you should pay attention to what you eat or drink during pregnancy. A proper diet and exercise is recommended in order to give birth to a healthy baby. Also, optimizing omega-3 nutritional status during pregnancy, particularly DHA (docosahexaenoic acid — present in omega-3 capsules), is critical. The recommended omega-3 intake during pregnancy is 200-300 mg/day, which can be obtained through dietary sources as well as drug supplements.

Furthermore, avoiding smoking, alcohol, and illegal drugs during pregnancy, as well as other toxins that can cause a variety of problems for the baby, including serious vision problems. Many of these issues are linked to low birth weight and/or prematurity, which may be linked to an increased risk of vision problems in infants.

Finally, the first step to ensuring healthy vision in kids is by adopting healthy lifestyles while they're in the womb. You can also consult your doctor for health advice and nutrition tips.
