Upper respiratory tract infection (URTI) is a common illness that affects the nose, throat, and sinuses. Symptoms may include a sore throat, runny nose, nasal congestion, sneezing, coughing, and fever. URTIs are usually caused by viruses, although bacteria can also cause them.
Most URTIs can be treated with self-care measures such as rest, drinking plenty of fluids, and using over-the-counter medications to relieve symptoms. Antibiotics are not needed as they are not effective against viral infections. However, if symptoms persist or worsen, you should see your doctor for further evaluation and treatment.
To prevent URTIs, it is important to practice good hand hygiene, use a facemask in dusty environments and cover up especially for very old and young people.
