Last week, a patient walked into our clinic saying, “It’s probably nothing… just small eye pain.” She had ignored it for three days, thinking it was from lack of sleep. Sometimes, she was right — mild eye pain can come from dryness, eye strain, or allergies, especially after long hours on screens.
But not always.
During her exam, we found early signs of an eye infection that needed prompt treatment. Thankfully, she came in when she did.
Here’s the difference: mild discomfort that improves with rest or blinking is often minor. But severe pain, light sensitivity, redness, blurred vision, headache, or nausea can signal something more serious — like infection, inflammation, or eye pressure problems.
Your eyes rarely “complain” without a reason. If pain feels unusual, intense, or doesn’t go away, don’t wait it out.
It’s always better to hear, “It’s nothing serious,” than to wish you came sooner.
When in doubt, check it out.
