The International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Ge***al Mutilation, observed annually on February 6th, brings attention to the dangerous tradition of female ge***al mutilation and calls for its global abolition.

This harmful practice, which provides no health benefits, involves the partial or total removal of the external female ge***alia. Subjecting girls and women to ge***al mutilation violates their human rights and can result in severe physical and psychological consequences, including increased risks of infertility, HIV transmission, and life-threatening childbirth complications.

By raising awareness and advocating against female ge***al mutilation worldwide, we can help protect millions of girls and women.

The time to act is now - join the movement to end this practice.

Leprosy, also known as Hansen's disease, is a chronic infectious disease caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium leprae. While it primarily affects the skin, peripheral nerves, and mucosal surfaces of the respiratory tract, leprosy can manifest in various forms, ranging from mild to severe.

One of the distinctive features of leprosy is the long incubation period, which can last from a few months to several years. The slow progression of the disease often leads to delayed diagnosis, contributing to the stigma historically associated with leprosy.

Leprosy primarily spreads through respiratory droplets, and its transmission is generally limited. Not everyone exposed to the bacteria develops the disease, as individual susceptibility plays a role. Early symptoms may include skin lesions, nodules, and numbness in affected areas. As the disease advances, nerve damage can lead to deformities and disabilities.

Over the years, medical advancements have provided effective multidrug therapy (MDT) for leprosy, enabling complete cure and preventing further transmission. Timely diagnosis and treatment are crucial to minimizing complications and reducing the stigma surrounding the disease.

Despite progress in treatment options, social stigma and discrimination against individuals affected by leprosy persist in various parts of the world. World Leprosy Day serves as a reminder to address these challenges, promoting education, awareness, and empathy to eliminate the prejudices associated with this ancient disease.

Efforts to combat leprosy extend beyond medical treatment, encompassing social and economic rehabilitation. Many organizations work towards integrating affected individuals into society, advocating for their rights, and fostering an environment of acceptance and inclusivity.

As we strive for a world free from the burdens of leprosy, it is essential to recognize the importance of compassion, education, and global cooperation in achieving this goal.

World Leprosy Day, observed annually on the last Sunday of January, serves as a guiding light towards a future free from discrimination against those who have overcome this curable disease.

The human body is an amazing machine, capable of incredible feats of strength and endurance.

However, despite its remarkable capabilities, it is also vulnerable to a range of health problems, many of which are related to weight.

That's why it's important to regularly monitor our Body Mass Index or BMI.

𝐁𝐮𝐭 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐞𝐱𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐥𝐲 𝐢𝐬 𝐁𝐌𝐈, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐰𝐡𝐲 𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐭 𝐬𝐨 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐭?

BMI is a calculation that determines whether a person is underweight, normal weight, overweight, or obese, based on their height and weight.

It's a simple and effective way to determine whether a person is at a healthy weight, or whether they need to take action to improve their health.

At its core, BMI is a measure of the amount of body fat a person has.

Excess body fat can lead to a range of health problems, including heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and even certain types of cancer example breast cancer, ovarian cancer.

It can also affect our mental health, causing low self-esteem, depression, and social isolation.

That's why it's so important to keep our BMI in check.

By monitoring our weight and taking action to maintain a healthy BMI, we can reduce our risk of developing these and other health problems.

We can also improve our overall quality of life, with more energy, better mental health, and a stronger sense of self-esteem.

𝐒𝐨 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐝𝐨 𝐰𝐞 𝐤𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐁𝐌𝐈 𝐢𝐧 𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐜𝐤?

The first step is to calculate our BMI.

This is a simple process that involves dividing our weight in kilograms by our height in meters squared.

Example: let's say my weight is 70kg and my height is 1.55 meters, multiple that be 2 ok, that is 1.55 ×1.55 which is equally 2.40

To calculate my BMI, i will say 70 divided by 2.40 and by that you'll have 29.17

We'll check if I am overweight, underweight, obese or overweight.

Once we have calculated our BMI, it's important to understand what the results mean.

A BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 is considered normal, while a BMI of 25 to 29.9 is considered overweight. A BMI of 30 or higher is considered obese.

So from our above calculation, my BMI which is 29.1 shows that I am overweight 🙀🙀

If our BMI is outside of the normal range, it's time to take action.

📌Get adequate sleep
📌Reduce stress levels
📌Limit alcohol consumption
📌Consult with a healthcare professional
📌Track progress and make adjustments as needed.
📌Reducing our calorie intake
📌choose healthier, nutrient-dense foods.

The importance of improving your BMI include:

📌it helps Reduces the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes
📌it Promotes better overall health and well-being
📌it Increases life expectancy
📌it Helps maintain a healthy weight
📌it Reduces the risk of certain cancers
📌it Improves physical and mental performance
📌Supports healthy bones and joints
📌it Enhances fertility and reproductive health
📌it Improves sleep patterns and quality of life
📌Supports healthy digestion and nutrient absorption
📌it Enhances overall appearance and self-esteem.

One of the most important things to remember about BMI is that it's not a perfect measure of health.

Some people may have a high BMI but be perfectly healthy, while others may have a low BMI but be at high risk for health problems.

That's why it's so important to talk to a healthcare professional about our health and well-being always.

They can help us understand our BMI results and provide guidance on what steps we need to take to improve our health and maintain a healthy weight.

In a relationship, couples need to support each other in maintaining a healthy BMI.

This can involve making changes together, such as cooking healthy meals and taking regular walks.

It can also involve encouraging each other to make positive lifestyle choices, such as getting enough sleep and reducing stress.

Ultimately, the importance of monitoring our BMI cannot be overstated.

By keeping our weight in check, we can reduce our risk of developing serious health problems and improve our overall quality of life.

So let's take control of our health today, and make monitoring our BMI a regular part of our routine.

Before I drop my pen I'll say , maintaining a healthy BMI is an important aspect of our overall health and well-being.

It can help us reduce our risk of developing serious health problems and improve our quality of life.

By monitoring our BMI, making healthy lifestyle choices, and seeking the guidance of a healthcare professional, we can take control of our health and live happier, healthier life.

A girl child is born in the same way as a boy child, but is more vulnerable to discrimination and violence.

In Nigeria, it is a struggle for girls to survive childhood. They face multiple and systemic violence, abuse, and neglect based on their gender.

They are victims of sexual abuse and exploitation, including human trafficking, abuse as domestic help, female ge***al mutilation, as well as early and forced marriages, among other harmful and discriminatory social norms.

The literacy rate for girls is lower than that of boys, and they are more likely to drop out of school. In countries where girls are not valued and are not given equal opportunities, they are unable to achieve their full potential.

Give the girl-child a voice, opportunities and empowerment towards building capacities to thrive like everyone else and bridge the gender inequality gap in leadership😘

Girls are leaders✅
Girls are heroes💯

"Our time is now, our right, our future"

Happy International Day of the Girl Child!🥳

So, if you're feeling down or struggling with any mental health issues, there are lots of ways that you can help.

You can start by talking to a psychologist, therapist or psychiatrist.

Are you depressed?

HIV/AIDS

HIV (human immuno deficiency virus) is a virus that attacks the body’s immune system. If HIV is not treated, it can lead to AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome).

RISK FACTORS
-Direct contact with body fluids of an infected partner such as blood, semen, vaginal fluids etc
-Unprotected sexual in*******se with an infected person.
-Having multiple sexual partners.
-Use/ sharing of contaminated sharp objects etc

PREVENTION
A- Abstinence.
Abstinence is a guaranteed prevention method for HIV/AIDS.

B- Be faithful.
Having only one partner is a good way to prevent HIV transmission. It's important that you and your partner know each others status before engaging in any unprotected encounters. After that, as long as you and your partner stay faithful to each other, there is a lower risk of contacting HIV/AIDS.

C- Condom use.
Condom should be used correctly and consistently.
Condoms are an excellent way to reduce your risk of contacting HIV especially if you have multiple partners!

D- Drugs.
Medication taken after exposure is called PEP, or Post-Exposure Prophylaxis, and can reduce the risk of becoming infected with HIV. This medication may be recommended after a r**e, needlestick injury (injuries caused by needles that puncture the skin) or if a condom has broken during a high-risk sexual activity.

CURE
There is currently no effective cure. Once people get HIV, they have it for life. But with proper medical care, HIV can be controlled. People with HIV who get effective HIV treatment can live long, healthy lives and protect their partners.
