DOING THE WORD OF GOD
James 1:22-24
MEMORY VERSE: "But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves" (James 1:22).
Sitting under holy and faithful ministers of God and listening to their teachings and messages amount to nothing if we do not DO according to the Word we hear.
In the Parable of the Sower (Matthew chapter 13), all the four classes of people listened and heard the sown Word, but only one class produced fruit at the end (Matthew 13:19, 20, 22, 23). God is more interested in what His Word has done in your life than in hypocritical listening without living by every week.
Mere listening and not doing the Word of God makes you like the Jews in the Bible, who were great at, reading, hearing and memorizing the Word, but do not act according to It (Matthew 23:3; Acts 7:53; Romans 2:17-24).
Also, the Lord Jesus declares, in Matthew 7:21-27, the necessity of obedience to His Word. He emphasizes that what distinguishes between a wise man and a foolish man is their response to the Word of God.
In the parable He gave (Parable of the Wise and the Foolish Builder) in Matthew 7:24-27, both the wise and the foolish have the same desires and aims: to build a lasting house. The "house" the houses they want to build signifies our whole life in our walking with the Lord.
Now, the big difference between the houses the two of them build is in the foundation. The foundation is that part of a house that is mostly hidden in the ground, and from the deepness below, it supports the whole house. In the deepness of the heart of the wise builder, there is the fiery desire to obey the Lord. And, by the help of the Holy Spirit, he has seen his spiritual poverty. He has humbled himself. He has an undying thirst after righteousness, cries in prayer that the will of God be done in his life. He rises up, without looking back, to do the will of God.
But, as you look at the Spirit' revelation of the heart of the foolish builder, he has no desire to obey the Lord. So, he only hears the teaching of God's Word. He neither put any into practice, nor have any inward will to do so. His Christianity is largely spread on the surface, but no deepness at all. His life's foundation is a shifting sand. Not only this, he does not even attempt to build his life on Christ the true Foundation. He only builds according to his thoughts, impressions, feelings, or ideas.
Now, every "house" we build will go through test at one point or the other. The storm, rain and flood will come. Only a house built solidly on Christ will stand. Nothing will ever destroy it.
To refuse to do according to the Word of God is to build your phantom house on a vain foundation. It will not last. The marriage (contracted with big, societal weddings) without seeking the will of God, a career built on mere knowledge without Christ, the boast of beauty without yielding to Christ, that great finacial achievement without living for Christ. And, if there is no genuine repentance and a full return to the Lord and His Word, the soul will be lost in eternity. That is why the Lord is calling everyone today to return fully to life of obedience to God's Word.
We pray that you will rise up, and begin to walk humbly according to God's Word everyday in Jesus Christ Name.
