A 27-year-old man presented with bad breath, which he first noticed four years ago. Initially, it was inconsistent and not bothersome. During examination, I observed grooves or cracks on his tongue, which can trap food particles and debris.
After ruling out other potential causes of bad breath, I concluded that the condition, known as fissured tongue, may be the cause. Fissured tongue has no known cause and cannot be cured. However, the fissures can trap food and debris, potentially leading to bad breath.
As there is no specific treatment, maintaining excellent oral hygiene is essential. For individuals with this condition, brushing twice daily may not be enough. I recommend gargling (rinsing your mouth) with an antiseptic mouthwash three times daily to help manage bad breath and keep the tongue clean.
