Our Founding Director, Dr. Awele Elumelu, OFR, who also serves as Chairperson of the boards of Avon Medical Practice and Avon HMO, the healthcare subsidiaries of Heirs Holdings Group, was recently spotlighted on Business Day Nigeria as one of the women transforming healthcare in Nigeria.

Under her vision and leadership, Avon HMO has grown into one of the country’s leading health management organisations, helping people live healthier, fuller lives. The organisation has impacted over 250,000 lives, working with 2,500 hospitals globally and paying more than ₦40 billion in claims.

Last week, the baby monkey, Punch, trended across social media; running back to its mother after being pushed away, again and again. What struck many wasn’t just the rejection, but the persistence. The instinct to belong, to be accepted, and the refusal to give up, even when access feels denied.

Development, at its core, must recognise that instinct. Across Africa, people continue to push toward opportunity; building, rebuilding, and innovating. Humanitarianism is simply organised empathy, an intentional design of growth that includes rather than excludes.

At Heirs Holdings, we believe true progress doesn't push people away from possibility, but creates pathways where potential is welcomed and empowered.

Last year, we partnered with GIVO Africa as the off-take and recycling partner across eight of our Lagos facilities, ensuring that PET and HDPE plastic waste generated from our operations did not end up in landfills or oceans.

Through this collaboration, we strengthened our commitment to accessible recycling, responsible waste management, and circular economy principles.

The impact:
♻️ ~500kg (half a metric tonne) of plastic recycled
🌍 16,000+ plastic bottles kept out of oceans and landfills
🌱 528kg CO₂e carbon offset, equivalent to 25 fully grown trees sequestering carbon for a year
☀️ Eco-friendly processing powered by solar energy and e-bike collections

At Heirs Holdings, we remain committed to embedding environmental responsibility into our operations and demonstrating how corporate institutions can lead by example.

15 years ago, we set out with a simple but powerful belief that Africa’s private sector must lead in transforming the continent.

Since then, we have built businesses, created jobs, empowered entrepreneurs, strengthened institutions, and demonstrated that doing well and doing good are not mutually exclusive.

This is a glimpse of some of the milestones that have shaped our journey.

How can science and technology transform African agriculture from subsistence to prosperity? Like the Kenyan researcher, Calestous Juma argued in the 70s, Africa’s agricultural development can be realised by adding value to what we grow and strengthening the systems that support farmers.

With 60% of the world’s uncultivated arable land, a rapidly growing population, and expanding regional markets, Africa’s agricultural potential can be strategic. The continent’s future food security, industrial growth, and economic resilience are deeply intertwined with how boldly we invest in agriculture. Will we continue to treat agriculture as survival, or as an engine of Africa’s transformation?

The private sector already plays a big role in shaping our economies, accounting for roughly 90% of jobs and about 70% of GDP in many parts of Africa. Our philosophy, , asks a simple question, "What if African private capital invested long-term in the sectors that create jobs, build infrastructure and expand markets?"

We believe the best solutions come when government sets the enabling environment and business brings capital, scale and operational expertise. Together, this unlocks faster, fairer growth for citizens and markets.

In this 2015 interview with Forbes Afrique, our Founder & Group Chair, Tony Elumelu, CFR, shares why private investment and public partnership are critical to Africa’s future.
