*Build your marriage

A pastor advises, 'To regain true intimacy, physical and emotional, to restore the closeness you once shared, you must be willing to allow your heart and soul to reopen.' If you've been hurt, that's not easy. But you must be willing to risk exposing yourself to the unknown in order to reconnect with one another. He continues: 'To bring a marriage back from the brink of divorce is not easy; in every union, there are unique considerations that must be worked out...Whether the problems in your marriage arise from external circumstances, such as losing a job or undergoing a home foreclosure, or problems with the relationship, such as an affair or addiction issues, you can only rebuild your relationship by revitalising what you once had and reconnecting with each other...

*The first step in reconnecting with your mate is to practise the art of getting to know the other person.'*

'Treat your wife [or husband] with understanding as you live together' *And 'understanding' your partner's needs takes time, attention and effort.*

*'What typically happens when we are first trying to figure out someone is that we put them in a box based on who and what we think they are. Then we stick a label on the box that we hope will follow them for the rest of their lives. Truly knowing someone is not about deciding who they should be and then wanting them to stay that way forever. The mystery of knowing another requires commitment to lifelong learning.'*

*In your marriage, make 'understanding' one another your highest priority.*

*Your spouse’s best qualities*

*If you want to build a happy marriage or improve a less-than-happy one:*

*(1) List your spouse’s best qualities.* The best marriages are built by couples who remember the qualities that initially attracted them to one another. *Write down the things you love most about him or her, and endeavour to keep those things in mind at all times.* When stresses and strains surface in your relationship, as they inevitably will, go over the list in your mind and, if necessary, refer to the written copy as a reminder.

*(2) Focus on them. Think how your spouse’s great qualities enrich your life, and how much you would miss them if he or she was not around. When you change your focus, you change your feelings. And when you change your feelings, you change your perspective, your approach and your reactions.*

*(3) Verbalise them.* _‘Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also…praises her’

*Your children learn how to build a great marriage or a miserable one by watching you. That thought alone should put the brakes on criticism and bring out the compliments!*

*(4) Nurture them.* _‘A man reaps what he sows’
*People wither under complaints, whereas they thrive and grow through praise and encouragement. Seize any moment worth celebrating and magnify it!* Paul bottom-lines it: _‘If you love someone, you will be loyal…no matter what the cost. You will always believe in him, always expect the best of him, and always stand your ground in defending him.

*Action Point.*
_List all your spouse best qualities, think about it, appreciate the difference they have made in your life, talk about it always even in the ears of the children, they will get better at it or get revived._

*Remember:*_The grass is green when you water it_
