Asthma is a long-term lung disease in which the air passage in the lungs swells and narrows down. The skin that lines the air passage swells and mucus oozes from it. As a result, the person has difficulty in breathing. A kind of whistling sound (wheezing) is produced while breathing.

Causes:

◆ Can be passed on from parents to their children

◆ Contact with air-borne allergens such as to***co sm pollen grains, chemicals, dust, mites.
Symptoms

• Persistent coughing that worsens at night or early in the morning

◆ Wheezing while breathing

• Tightness of chest that may feel as if someone is squeezing your chest

◆ Shortness of breath or difficulty in breathing

Diagnosis

Asthma can be diagnosed with the help of certain tests such as lung function test, allergy test and chest X-rays.

Prevention and control:

◆ A person suffering from asthma should know about the allergens causing asthma.

◆ Medicines should be taken after consultation with a doctor.

Hygienic and healthy lifestyle should be maintained.

Regular checkups for asthma should be done.

Treatment:

Generally, two types of drugs are prescribed to asthma patients: bronchodilators and steroids. Bronchodilators give instant relief from chest tightness and wheezing as they contain chemicals that relax the bronchiole walls. Many asthmatic patients carry an inhaler with them (Fig. 9.8). Steroids act by reducing the degree of inflammation of the bronchioles.

HbA1c:

HbA1c test is a blood test that measures your average blood sugar levels over the past 3 months.
It helps to diagnose prediabetes and diabetes and also helps manage diabetes.

Hemoglobin is a protein found in red blood cells which carries oxygen throughout your body.
The sugar in your blood is called glucose which binds to the hemoglobin in your red blood cells.
The A1c test measures how much glucose is bound to the red cells.
Red blood cells live for about 3 months, so the test shows the average level of glucose in your blood for the past 3 months.

Interpretations
Below 5.7%: Normal
5.7 to 6.4: Prediabetes
6.5 or higher: Diabetes
