🩸 Let's Talk Sickle Cell Disease: Myths vs Facts 🧠
Too many people still believe dangerous myths about sickle cell disease (SCD), and it's time we change that. Whether you're a carrier, a warrior, or simply someone who cares, understanding the truth can save lives and reduce stigma.
🔍 Did you know?
- SCD doesn't only affect Black people — it impacts communities across the Mediterranean, Middle East, India, and Latin America.
- It's NOT contagious. You can't “catch” it — it's inherited from both parents.
- People with SCD are NOT lazy. Chronic pain and fatigue are real and debilitating.
- With proper care, many patients live well into adulthood — even into their 50s and beyond.
💡 Nigeria has the highest burden of SCD globally, yet awareness is still low. We must do better.
✅ What you can do:
- Get tested before marriage or having children.
- Share facts, not fear.
- Support sickle cell foundations.
- Advocate for better healthcare and genetic counseling.
Let’s stand together for education, compassion, and change.
