Nutrition Society of Nigeria (NSN) Engages Stakeholders in Oyo State
The Nutrition Society of Nigeria (NSN) executives, led by Professor Salisu Abubakar (Current NSN President), alongside Professor W. A. Afolabi (NSN Immediate Past President), Professor Bartholomew Brai (NSN Past President), Professor Folake Samuel (Ex-Officio), and Dr. Oluwaseun Ariyo (NSN General Secretary), paid a courtesy visit to the Oyo State Primary Healthcare Board, Ibadan, Oyo State. During the visit, they were warmly received by Mrs. Omolara Oladeji, State Nutrition Officer, and other nutrition officers.
The state's remarkable achievements in nutrition were highlighted during the meeting. Notably, the state has recruited 40 new nutrition officers, bringing the total number of nutritionist working with Oyo State Government to 72, and established additional nutrition departments. Furthermore, the state has successfully trained 900 health workers in both public and private hospitals on MIYCN and is producing soy flour for managing moderate acute malnutrition. The state has also seen a positive impact of the ANRiN project, with reduced prevalence of stunting, and has become the first in the South West to participate in the UNICEF Child Nutrition Fund.
The NSN executives commended the state's efforts and offered valuable advice, emphasizing the need for sustainability plans to maintain the momentum of nutrition activities under the ANRiN project.
They also stressed the importance of having dedicated nutrition desk officers in relevant ministries. Additionally, the team paid a courtesy visit to Dr. Akin Fagbemi, Chairman of the Oyo State Hospital Management Board, commending the state's efforts in promoting nutrition. The landmark progress in nutrition under the Hospital management board is also commended. Likewise, in the Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, the team visited the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry and the chairman of the State Committee on Food and Nutrition, Pastor J. A. Ayanleke and other officers of the ministry.
The team commended the good work in nutrition coordination in the state and lauded the state for the timely launching of the Oyo State Multisectoral Plan on Food and Nutrition.
