1. Walking backward: This unusual movement burns more calories than forward walking, engages the brain more, reduces knee strain, and strengthens neglected muscles.

2. Cold exposure therapies: Regular exposure to cold like cold showers or cold water immersion boosts the immune system, improves circulation, increases energy, and can reduce inflammation.

3. Humming while breathing through the nose: This practice helps clear sinuses and reduce infection frequency by vibrating nasal passages, which sounds odd but has practical benefits especially during allergy seasons.

4. Drinking pickle juice: Despite sounding strange, it delivers electrolytes and probiotics that aid digestion, hydration after exercise, and overall gut health.

5. Talking to trees (forest bathing): Engaging with nature by simply talking to trees or spending time in forests lowers stress, improves immune function, and supports mental balance.

Your body has a system that decides, “Is now a good time for pregnancy?”

And if the answer is no, your period can delay, skip, or become irregular. But MENTAL stress and PHYSICAL stress do this in different ways.

Some situations where you’ll be mentally stressed:

- Having exam anxiety
- Dying under work pressure
- That relationship drama
- Family issues
- Grief

Think of your brain like a transformer. When there’s too much “voltage” (stress), it cuts power to non-essential areas. How?

To deal with the mental stress, cortisol (stress hormone) increases.

High cortisol tells your brain “we have problems o!” So your brain reduces the hormones needed for ovulation.

No ovulation = irregular or missing periods.

The surprising part is that…

You can be eating well, sleeping 8 hours, not exercising — but your period still disappears because your MIND is stressed.

Your body is physically fine, but your brain says “emergency mode,” so your reproductive system clocks out.

Examples:

- Missing your period during exams
- Period delay while planning for your wedding
- Irregular cycles after losing a loved one
- Missed period during project defence

We often don’t link these to stress because they’re not all that physically demanding.

Even after the stress passes, your cycle might still misbehave for weeks because your hormones need time to “reset”, like rebooting your phone after it hangs.

The difference to physical stress is that this one requires your BODY to be overworked/underfed. Think of your body like a phone battery at 20%. It starts closing background apps to save power.

Your reproductive system is a “background app” & when energy is LOW, it’s shut down.

MENTAL STRESS = Your mind thinks there’s danger (even if body is healthy)

PHYSICAL STRESS = Your body lacks resources to function properly

Many women prioritise solving for the latter while ignoring the former, but both have effects on your period.

📊 Research shows only 50% of Nigerians take chronic illness medication as prescribed. That means half of us are at risk for preventable complications.

But it doesn’t have to be this way.

We wrote a complete guide on chronic illness management in Nigeria — covering diabetes management, hypertension treatment, medication adherence, and the mental health factor nobody talks about.

🔗 Read the full blog (link in bio) for practical solutions that actually work.

Managing chronic illness alone is hard. But managing it with the right support? That changes everything.

Today is , and supporting mental health goes far beyond well-meaning phrases. It’s built through the small, consistent actions we take every day, the ones that often slip our minds in our busy lives.

Over 1 billion people globally live with a mental health condition, yet most people affected — 75% in many low-income countries — do not have access to the treatment they need. When we normalise these conversations and show up in meaningful ways, we create communities where people feel safe to seek help.

Real support looks like:

• Checking in on someone who’s been quiet lately
• Actually listening without rushing to fix or judge
• Sharing resources without making assumptions
• Speaking openly about mental health in everyday conversation
• Noticing the small changes in people around you

What do you wish someone told you during your darkest moments?
