NewBorn Babies
I was on night duty when i was called to attend to a 22year old primigravida (first conception) who came in labour.
Delivery was successful, mother and child well and stable. She was counselled on proper care of the newborn and was discharged after 48hours.
After 4days post discharge from the hospital, baby brought back with complaint of
1. High grade fever
2. Inability to suckle the breast.
3. Restlessness.
On this note it will interest us to note that care of newborn is tedious and fundamental to their survival as they do not talk but communicate to the mother through various means.
On assessment of what transpired that a previously healthy bouncing baby girl turned out to be very ill looking within a space of 6days. I will advice all mother to always do the following.
1. Clean the baby umbilical cord atleast every 4 hours with spirit swab or chlorhexidine until it falls off.
2. Do not give your baby any fluid except breast milk in the first 6months of life
3. Breastfed baby as frequent as possible as may be required by the baby( atleast 3 hourly interval)
4. Always empty one breast at a go before jumping to the contralateral breast
5. Keep your baby warm by mother to child body contact and as well covering babys body well.
6. Always cover your baby with well treated nets.
7. Do not by any means give your baby a herbal concussion ( very important).
8. Ensure your baby is properly immunized for age.
9. Always seek the help on medical doctor if your baby have the following (a) fever (b) excessive cry (c) difficulty breathing or fast breathing (d) unable to suckle (e) coughing (f) passage of watery stool.

HELP SAVE THESE TRIPLET

I was busy in the consulting room with a patient when one of my nurses I was working with came and whispered that a woman urgently needed my attention. The nurse sounded tensed and I asked that she should be brought in immediately. When she was ushered in, I found that the woman had triplet; she was carrying one on her back and the other in her arms, while my nurse helped her with the third baby.

The triplet are 11 months old with swollen face, abdomen and foot, fever and other accompanied symptoms. I quickly asked for their hospital’s folder for proper documentation and was told that the woman could afford only a folder for the 3 kids, which is against the hospital’s policy. We rallied to the hospital’s management and they approved commencement of treatment because of the deteriorating health of those lovely triplet, even though the woman had no money for hospital deposit.

Currently, we have been able to get them out of the acute phase of the illness and they are responding to treatment, although they need further evaluations. The question now is, who takes care of the bill in my hospital and the poor young girl of about 24 years of old who happened to take in for a man that claimed to be her husband but abandoned her immediately she got pregnant, throughout the pregnancy period, to the time of delivery and till date? These children have suffered from exposure to infections, environmental hazards, harsh weather and inadequate feeding, and they have battled and survive till date.

These triplet deserve to live and they can survive by your help and contributions.
Firstly, the mother need to pay off the hospital bills.
Secondly, these kids need further evaluations to rule out other comorbidities.
Lastly, the woman need to start a small scale business which will become a source of livelihood for these beautiful children.

I know with our little effort, we can reach out to well-meaning Nigerians who will help save these children. Please help share to your groups, we can be proud to say we are part of the survival of these kids.
