CRANIOPHARYNGIOMA

is a rare, typically benign brain tumor that develops near the pituitary gland and hypothalamus. It can cause:
- Hormonal imbalances: Affecting growth, development, and metabolism
- Vision problems: Due to pressure on the optic nerves
- Headaches and increased intracranial pressure

Treatment usually involves surgery, and sometimes radiation therapy. Craniopharyngiomas are more common in children and young adults.

:
- Headaches
- Vision problems (double vision, loss of peripheral vision)
- Hormonal imbalances (growth hormone deficiency, thyroid hormone deficiency)
- Increased intracranial pressure
- Nausea and vomiting
- Cognitive and behavioral changes

Options:
- Surgery (transsphenoidal or craniotomy)
- Radiation therapy (external beam or stereotactic)
- Combination of surgery and radiation

:
- Generally good for benign tumors
- Recurrence possible
- Long-term hormone replacement therapy may be needed

:
- Regular follow-up with endocrinologist and neurosurgeon
- Monitoring for recurrence and hormonal imbalances

1. Calcium & Ceftriaxone

Risk: Precipitation of calcium ceftriaxone complex, which can be life-threatening, especially in neonates.

Precaution: Avoid mixing calcium-containing solutions (e.g., calcium gluconate) with ceftriaxone, especially in the same line. Use alternative antibiotics or different lines for administration.

2. Phenytoin & Dextrose

Risk: Precipitation of phenytoin when mixed with dextrose-containing solutions (e.g., D5W), which can cause a blockage in IV lines.

Precaution: Phenytoin should be administered with normal saline (NS) only and never mixed with dextrose solutions.

3. Heparin & Many Antibiotics

Risk: Some antibiotics, especially penicillins, cephalosporins, and some cephamycin drugs, may inactivate heparin or cause it to precipitate.

Precaution: Use separate IV lines or flush between infusions. Consult compatibility charts when administering.

4. Amphotericin B & Normal Saline (NS)

Risk: Amphotericin B can be inactivated by chloride-containing solutions like NS.

Precaution: Dilute amphotericin B in D5W and avoid mixing with any chloride-containing solutions.

5. Vancomycin & Piperacillin/Tazobactam (Zosyn)

Risk: These drugs can be incompatible when mixed in the same IV bag, resulting in precipitation.

Precaution: Administer vancomycin and Zosyn through separate lines or flush between infusions.

6. Lorazepam & Phenytoin

Risk: Precipitation and clogging of IV lines.

Precaution: Administer these drugs via separate IV lines or in different time slots, with proper flushing in between.

7. Ceftriaxone & Other IV Medications (e.g., Bicarbonate, Calcium)

Risk: Dangerous precipitation and formation of solid particles, especially when mixed with calcium or bicarbonate solutions.

Precaution: Never mix ceftriaxone with calcium or sodium bicarbonate in the same line, particularly in pediatric patients.

8. Furosemide & Sodium Bicarbonate

Risk: Precipitation due to chemical reaction.

Precaution: Avoid mixing furosemide with sodium bicar
