*River blindness* (Onchocerciasis):Is
A parasitic disease caused by a worm called Onchocerca volvulus, transmitted via blackfly bites (breeding in fast-flowing rivers).This Onchocerciasis are common in parts of Africa (including Nigeria),
especially in rural areas.
Symptoms of River blindness
- Severe itching,
- Skin damage
- Blurry vision
The Prevention of River blindness
-Avoid black fly bites: By staying in a safe environment where these insects does not breed and use insects repellents.
-wear protective clothing and avoid residing near river areas.
The treatment involves is mectizan and ivermectin which kill the larvae and prevent further damage. The drug is often provided in epidemic countries which is free through mass drug administration programs, with support from the WHO(World Health Organisation) and the NGOS( Non Governmental Organisations)

To prevent this, wash hands regularly, keep fingernails short and clean, wash fruits and vegetables properly, ensure clean water and proper sanitation, and deworm regularly as advised.

Treatment removes worms, but good hygiene prevents them from coming back.
