What is Metabolic syndrome?
A person is said to have Metabolic syndrome when he/she has 3 or more of the five conditions that increase the risk factors that can lead to heart disease, diabetes, stroke and other health problems.
These are the conditions:
A waistline of 40 inches or more for men and 35 inches or more for women (measured across the belly)
A blood pressure of 130/85 mm Hg or higher or are taking blood pressure medications
A triglyceride level above 150 mg/d
l
A fasting blood glucose (sugar) level greater than 100 mg/dl or are taking glucose-lowering medications
A high density lipoprotein level (HDL) less than 40 mg/dl (men) or under 50 mg/dl (women)
If you have three of the above conditions, you have metabolic syndrome and you run the risk of developing heart disease, diabetes, certain cancers, blood clot formation, which can block arteries and cause heart attacks and strokes.
The best solution is to eat a balance diet, exercise, moderate weight loss, in the range of 5% to 10% of body weight.
