HUNGER DOES NOT CAUSE ULCER
You might have probably been told, or at one point, heard when growing up by your parents—particularly your mother yelling at you:
"Hey! Make sure you eat before going to school, I can’t afford you coming up with an Ulcer if you refuse to eat!"
That's true, right? A typical Nigerian mother will say this often.😊
It is alright if you were told this while growing up (at least the fear of whatever it was, would scare you if you refused to eat.
But, medically speaking, hunger does NOT cause Ulcer.
Let's break it down, Ulcer, as it is popularly known in layman's term is called by health professionals as PEPTIC ULCER: a sore that develops on the lining of the stomach or small intestine.
Simply put, Ulcer occurs when stomach acid damages the lining of the stomach.
From creation, our stomach has a corrosive acid that is present from the day we are born to the day we die. This acid has its functions (find out) and is a very harmful acid (this acid can melt a razor).
Our stomach on the other hand has a tiny but strong lining, this lining prevents the acid from consuming our stomach wall while performing its duties in our body.
Ulcer starts, when Helicobacter Pylori (H. Pylori) a bacteria, finds its way through that lining to the stomach wall and then the strong acid follows that curved path through to the stomach wall and then erodes a part of the stomach wall.
This bacteria can be gotten from dirty water, infected utensils, long-term use of anti-inflammatory pain relievers like Aspirin, Ibuprofen, etc also causes ulcer.
H. Pylori causes about 60% of Peptic Ulcer while some drugs constitute the remaining 40%.
There are also other causes of Ulcer like:
1. Alcohol
2. Smoking
3. Family history of ulcer.
If you have Peptic Ulcer Disease:
Avoid spicy fried foods
Avoid hunger strikes/ fasting
Avoid drugs e.g Ibuprofen
Avoid Citrus fruits like orange
Avoid carbonated drinks and alcohol, especially on an empty stomach
Pineapple may also trigger ulcer patients.
How then did hunger come in? Hunger comes in because it increases the severity of the opening of the lining of the stomach hence the need to eat often.
Caution: do a proper diagnosis before you commence any treatment for an ulcer.
