During one of our hepatitis screening and vaccination campaigns at Lopez Pharmacy, a woman walked in with her family. She decided that day to take a bold step — to get herself and her loved ones vaccinated against hepatitis B.

A few months later, she went to help a relative who had just delivered a baby, according to Igbo traditional custom of omugwo. Unknown to her at the time, this relative had hepatitis B during pregnancy but did not disclose it.

When she eventually found out, she was devastated and very afraid. She rushed back to me, deeply worried about possible exposure.

That was when I shared the good news with her: “Because you took the vaccine, you are already covered and protected.”

To be sure, we carried out another hepatitis test on her — and she came out negative.

The relief and joy on her face said it all. She was grateful she had made the decision to get vaccinated that day, and even more grateful her family was protected too.

This real-life experience shows the power of prevention. Vaccination is not just a health decision — it is a shield that saves lives, protects families, and brings peace of mind.
