Incident Report: Arrest of Suspected Serial Bike Hijacker and Aftermath
Earlier Yesterday, an incident occurred involving a suspected serial bike hijacker in Ondo town. A motorcyclist raised alarm after noticing his friend’s motorcycle being ridden by an unfamiliar man. While trailing him, the motorcyclist persistently asked the suspect about the owner of the bike, but the suspect refused to respond.
The motorcyclist eventually intercepted the suspect near St. Andrew’s Grammar School, after the Civic Center. Upon confrontation, the suspect remained evasive. As a crowd gathered, he was apprehended and beaten by bystanders.
Officers from the Amotekun Corps arrived at the scene and rescued the suspect. He was taken to Ondo General Hospital for medical treatment and interrogation. It was observed that the suspect was wearing a military vest, raising suspicion about his identity. Shortly after, a police van arrived at the hospital to deposit the body of a man found lifeless near the Flagship Hotel. The deceased was identified as a victim of a robbery and bike hijacking that occurred the previous night.
Further investigation revealed that the suspect in custody was responsible for the murder and hijacking. Several other victims came forward, including a motorcyclist with a bandaged hand who claimed the suspect shot and stole his bike the previous Saturday at the same location. Two additional bikemen also identified the suspect as the person who had hijacked their motorcycles in previous weeks.
The leadership of the Ondo Ekimogun Youth Congress (OEYC), along with other community stakeholders, contacted the Nigerian Army to verify the suspect’s claim of being a military personnel. Upon inspection, the army confirmed that the suspect is not affiliated with the military.
Some suspected individuals at the scene were taken to Yaba Police Station for questioning but were later released after being found innocent. Tensions escalated when members of the Hausa Okada (motorcycle) community arrived at the hospital in large numbers, demanding immediate ex*****on of the suspect. They alleged that the same individual was responsible for the recent killings of up to 10 Hausa bikemen in Ondo. During the confrontation, the DPO of Yaba Division was attacked with stones, and parts of the hospital’s accident and emergency ward were vandalized.
To prevent further escalation, Some Respected Youth Leader in Ondo, the Chief Security Officer (CSO), OEYC leadership, and the State Chairman of the Okada Riders Association, Mr. Aloba, addresses the Okada Riders to stay calm and give law procedure room but when out of hand they proceeded to the Ondo Area Command, Yaba. Security reinforcements, including the police, DSS, local hunters, and the military, were deployed with tear gas to disperse the mob and secure the hospital. The suspect was then transferred to Akure for further investigation.
The President of OEYC, Engr. Folajogun Kayode, later visited High Chief Simeon Oguntimehin, the Lisa of Ondo Kingdom, and subsequently reported to His Imperial Majesty. The King issued a directive that no Hausa motorcyclists would be allowed to operate in Ondo until the hospital damages were repaired, as patients in the affected ward are currently stranded.
Later, reports emerged that some Hausa individuals attempted to ambush security personnel near Odosida but were repelled by a joint task force.
The OEYC and the youth of Ondo Kingdom reaffirm their commitment to peace, law, and order. They strongly condemn jungle justice and the violent actions by the Hausa Okada riders and urge all communities to respect due process in pursuit of justice.
