STEPS IN APPLYING CPR
1. Check for responsiveness: Gently shake the person and ask loudly, "Are you okay?" If there is no response, the person is unresponsive, and CPR should be initiated.
2. Call for help: If there are other people around, ask someone to call emergency medical services (EMS) or the local emergency number. If you are alone, make the call yourself before starting CPR.
3. Open the airway: Place the person on their back on a firm surface. Tilt their head back gently and lift the chin to open the airway. This helps to ensure that the person's airway is clear for breathing.
4. Check for breathing: Look, listen, and feel for signs of normal breathing. Watch for chest rise, listen for breath sounds, and feel for breath on your cheek. If the person is not breathing or is only gasping, it indicates a cardiac arrest, and CPR should be initiated.
5. Perform chest compressions: Position yourself beside the person's chest. Place the heel of one hand on the center of the person's chest, between the ni***es. Place your other hand on top of the first hand, interlocking your fingers. Keep your arms straight, shoulders directly over your hands, and compress the chest downward at least 2 inches (5 centimeters) at a rate of about 100-120 compressions per minute. Allow the chest to fully recoil between compressions.
6. Provide rescue breaths: After 30 compressions, open the person's airway again by tilting the head and lifting the chin. Pinch the person's nose shut and create a seal over their mouth with yours. Give two rescue breaths, each lasting about one second, while watching for chest rise. If the chest does not rise, reposition the head and try again. Continue cycles of 30 compressions and two rescue breaths.
7. Continue CPR cycles: Keep repeating cycles of 30 compressions and two rescue breaths until the person shows signs of life, such as breathing, or until professional medical help takes over.
