MY STORY๐ข
Begining of February last 2 years - 2018 to be precise I basically started noticing certain changes in my body, my mouth was always dry, increased hunger, my muscles sore like I had run a marathon, unbearably thirsty plus frequent visitation to the bathroom. So I just assumed my problem and did self-medication for like 2 weeks still no change.
So by the third week I went to see my doctor, after consultation and several checkups one of them was my sugar level when I asked her why my sugar level? She said she just wants to be sure about her suspicions- which she refused to tell me. Surprisingly the meter couldnโt read my sugar level, right away, she called the ER and told them I was coming over.
The ER was able to read my sugar level which was 911 and I was diagnosed of DIABETIES I was so confused because nobody in my family had diabetes to top it all I am slim and all I knew was diabetics are meant to be fat- no offence. I spent 2 days plus to get my blood sugar down. I got home trying to wrap my head around the whole news because I still had unanswered questions then I went online and I began my research. These were my findings:-
I found out that DIABETES also called diabetes mellitus is a long-lasting health condition that affects how your body turns food into energy. when your blood glucose also called blood sugar is too high, the pancreas, an organ that lies near the stomach, makes a hormone called insulin which is released into the blood.
There are as well several types of diabetes but the most common are type 2 diabetes, type 1 diabetes, prediabetes and gestational diabetes.
Looking into the causes, I got to know that the exact cause of type 1 diabetes is unknown and type 2 diabetes (which I was diagnosed of) develops when the body becomes resistant to insulin or when the pancreas is unable to produce enough insulin. Diet high in fat, calories and cholesterol leads to obesity which increases your risk of diabetes. Although I found out that you must not be obese to be diabetic- which clears my confusion of being slim and having diabetes. Genes and not being physically active.
So, I have learnt to live and manage my diabetes by eating healthy meals, limiting calories, being physically active, managing my blood glucose, blood pressure and cholesterol, taking every medicine prescribed for me by my doctor and as well keeping in touch with my doctor incase of any complications.
My advice to you all, loose weight if you are overweight, move more and eat healthy foods to lower your risks of developing diabetes.
