"YOUR REGULAR PAINKILLERS COULD BE HURTING YOUR STOMACH UNKNOWN TO YOU"
NSAIDs and ULCER-Things you need to know👇👇
What are these NSAIDs:
The NSAIDs (such as Ibuprofen , diclofenac, Piroxicam etc) you take can damage the stomach lining and trigger ulcers.
They work by blocking the COX-1 enzyme, which normally helps produce protective substances (prostaglandins) that shield the stomach from acid. When these protective substances are reduced, stomach acid can irritate the lining, leading to gastritis, ulcers, or even bleeding.
Therefore it's important to always indicate that you have ULCER before a pain relief is prescribed to you by your Physician or Pharmacist so your ULCER isn't triggered!
Now you'd ask-"Pharm, what pain relief can we ulcer patients take?"
Here are some PREVENTION TIPS!👇
☘️If you must use an NSAID for more than 1week you can add a Proton pump inhibitor (PPI) (e.g., omeprazole, Esomeprazole etc)while taking the NSAID when necessary. This will suppress the negative effect of the NSAID on the stomach lining!
☘️You can also use misoprostol(Prostaglandin analog)+NSAID combinations
(E.g Diclofenac+misoprostol). This will help to protect the stomach lining!
☘️Consider COX-2 selective inhibitors (Coxibs e.g., celecoxib) which causes less gastric damage.
