Last week was a very busy one for us. We participated in a series of Advocacy visits. The hallmark of the event was a visit to the Emir's Palace. We are collaborating with the Emirate to bring a massive Glaucoma screening exercise to the people of Nasarawa state. Anticipate.

The ChairPerson Nigerian Optometric Association (Nasarawa state chapter) Dr Nneka Opara received the Royal Kolanut from His Royal Highness Hon. Justice Sidi Dauda Bage, Emir of Lafia Bare Bari and Chairman Nasarawa state Council of Chiefs.

On today's episode of "Thank God it's Fr-Eye-day" I'd like for everyone to know that their Eye doctors can detect alot of systemic conditions/diseases patients don't even know they have, and one of such is DIABETES. Yes, by just looking at your eyes we can tell if you are diabetic or not, for most part. Yes It's another Fre-EYE-day. We at police Clinic are always glad on Fridays, because it's the day we focus on free education on eye health for our local population. Today we are focusing on glaucoma, the "silent thief of sight". Many people are living with glaucoma and are unaware. People only visit the clinic at end stage; when the condition must have done an irreversible damage. With glaucoma, early detection is key.
Glaucoma is hereditary, thus we insist members in a family talk to eachother if anyone in the immediate family has it, which places everyone in that family at a higher risk.

A wise man said "prevention is more better than CURE"

Preventive care for the eye is a deliberate action that helps you keep your eyes healthy and avoid common causes of short eyesight or blindness. This content will expose you to preventive measures to protect your eyes from losing their vision or becoming blind in the future.

Here is a list of 4 ways you can prevent short eyesight or blindness.

1. Eat well: it is true you're what you eat. A healthy diet will not only nourish your skin but also protect your eyes from diseases.

Vegetables and fruits are healthy food you should always eat.

2. Avoid smoking: get off to***co in any form it is not only dangerous for your health but also for your eyes. Smoking puts you at a high risk of getting cataracts, dry eyes and it also raises the risk of macular degeneration.

3. Protect your eyes from the sun: according to Rebecca Taylor an ophthalmologist in America.
She recommended two safeguards for your eyes which are: sunscreen and sunglasses.

4. Go for a regular eye checkup or examination: having a regular checkup for the eye is the only way to catch a variety of problems, such as glaucoma or diabetic eye disease before they damage your eyes

Remember they say "prevention is better than cure".

Here we say " It is easier to prevent blindness than to treat blindness".

But you may have been ignorant and must have involved in unhealthy activities that have caused you eye issues or perhaps you are scared your unhealthy behaviors may have an effect on your eyes. Eye drops are often used to treat dryness, glaucoma, allergies, or infections in the eye. so it is important to use eye drops correctly because the eye is a very sensitive part of our body, but we often make mistakes while applying them.
While using Eye drops for treatment, here are the 4 mistakes we often make.

1. Overuse or underuse eye drop treatment, which can make the eye drop less effective.

2. Ignore expiration dates.

3. Applying drops too quickly, which often leads to wastage.

4. Applying different eye drop dosages simultaneously. You should maintain 30 minutes window between prescribed drops.
