This week is WORLD GLAUCOMA WEEK.
WHAT IS GLAUCOMA?
It is a group of related eye disorders, resulting in progressive damage to the optic nerve that can lead to loss of vision and even blindness.
Major risk factor is elevated intraocular pressure (IOP), although a variant may develop without elevated IOP.
OTHER RISK FACTORS?
Age over 40 years, family history of glaucoma, black racial ancestry, diabetes, injury to the eyes, decrease in corneal thickness & rigidity.
FACTS:
• Glaucoma is the leading cause of world's irreversible blindness. As many as 6million individuals are blind in both eyes from glaucoma.
• 1 in 200 people aged 40 have glaucoma, which rises to 1 in 8 by age 80.
• Glaucoma may show no symptoms and half of those living with it are unaware.
• Early diagnosis and treatment are key to preserving sight in people with glaucoma.
WHEN TO GET CHECKED?
• Before age 40: every 2-4 years
• From 40 - 60: every 2-3 years
• After 60: every 1-2 years
