Autism affects the followings:
1. Communication
2. Social Interaction
3. Thinking and functional skills
4. Sensory processing
Autistic children have higher death rates isn’t about autism itself being “fatal.” It’s mostly about a set of associated risks and circumstances that, unfortunately, can increase the chance of early death if not well managed.
Some of these factors include:
1. Co-occurring medical conditions.
Some autistic children have other health issues, especially Epilepsy, which can raise the risk of sudden or accidental death. Sleep disorders, gastrointestinal problems, and genetic conditions can also be a contributor.
2. Communication barriers:
Some autistic children have difficulty expressing pain, illness, or danger. That can delay caregivers from noticing serious problems or seeking help in time.
Let connect this to sensory, now because they react differently to pain, sounds, light and so on.
Sometimes they feel pain way less than the neurotypical individual.
So because they can't express themselves and how much pain they feel, you as a parent, caregiver and therapist may likely not know because of their hyper activeness. Before you detect maybe cause they don't act in a certain way you know them to, it might have been too late. Please pay rapt attention to them, and take them for regular check up.
As a therapist, if you observe anything kindly notify the parents ASAP.
Don't be selfish, that you must take them for session because you don't want your money to be deducted.
Please let it be deducted, no child's life is worth playing with. Give them time to recover before you resume your session back. Even if it's during your session, you noticed anything please pack up for that day immediately.
3. Accidental injury (especially drowning):
Autistic children are more likely to wander (sometimes called “elopement”), which can lead them into dangerous situations. One of the leading causes of death is drowning, because water can be particularly dangerous or calming to some children on the spectrum.
Always keep an eye on them. If you can't sight them please look for them immediately.
Lastly,
4. Mental health challenges:
As children grow older, risks related to anxiety, depression, and selfharm can increase, especially if they don’t have adequate support or face social isolation.
That's why you need to teach them about themselves when they are younger and teach them to be their own advocate. Give them affirmations on the morning and always listen to any signs they give. Be your child bestie while you are still being a parent.
