Travelling with HIV Medication
The following are some tips to consider when travelling with HIV medication:

📍Always carry your medication in your hand luggage - checked luggage might get lost or delayed.

📍Always take some days of extra medication with you. You might not return as planned, for unforeseeable reasons. It is cumbersome to run after expensive prescription medication in a different country, and you might not even receive the drugs you are taking if in need.

📍You may have to check specific customs regulation for importing your medication. In almost all cases, importing medicines for personal use would not pose a problem. To be on the safe side, carry a doctor’s prescription in English with you. The prescription should make no mention of HIV.

📍Carry your medication in original packaging, labelled with your name.

📍Do not disclose your HIV status unnecessarily. Not to other travellers, not to customs or immigration officials – it is not their business. Be aware that people with HIV are stigmatised in many countries.

📍If you stay in a country for a longer period, or if your health is frail, make sure you know where the next HIV clinic is, or get the address of a clinician specialised in HIV. It might be a good idea to get in touch with a local HIV organisation.

Most important: be aware that perceptions around HIV infection change from country to country. So if disclosure is safe in the country and community you normally live in, this might not be the case in the country you are visiting.

To those who are newly infected or who find it hard to accept the new conditions they have to live under.

Remember this, you are not sick.
Its only a stain in your blood that you have to maintain not to spread any further.
Your life is and will stay the same, you are not any different from any other person whose negative.
You did not chose the virus and it can happen to any one, so it doesn't mean you were reckless.
You can still live a meaningful and fulfilling life.
You can get married, have kids in a normal way and get to see them grow.
It's not a death sentence.
Fact is "your death might be of a different cause"🤷🏿‍♂️

Whatever your age may be, you still have a life to live.
Your friends or family might be judgemental or not supportive but it is up to you to accept and make your life work.

Stay positive mentally and live your life.
With love G.B

VIRAL LOAD is the amount of virus in an HIV-positive person.

VIRAL LOAD TEST measures the number of viral copies in a milliliter {mL} of blood.

We always want the viral load to be as low as possible.

If you had 75000 copies/mL when starting ARV medication, you need to reduce this to below 50 {

Can HIV Live Outside the Body?

HIV does not live outside the body for very long. Compared with other types of viruses, such as flu or chickenpox, HIV is relatively fragile: It does not thrive at room temperature (68 degrees F), when exposed to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun, or at pH levels that are dissimilar to that of blood.

If you forget to take your pill, take one as soon as you remember up to 10 hours after your normal time.
If it is beyond 10 hours after your normal time, treat that as a missed dose and take the next one at your normal time.

But that should not become a habit for failing to take your pill on time too often, you may unknowingly create a drug-resistant strain of HIV.
If such a thing happens it may lead to treatment failure.
