DIABETES AND THE EYES
Diabetes affects the eyes when blood glucose, also called blood sugar, is too high.

In the short term, high glucose can change fluid levels or cause swelling in the tissues of the eyes that help one to focus. However, if blood glucose stays high over time, it can damage the tiny blood vessels in the back of the eyes.

The most serious diabetic eye diseases begin with blood vessel problems, and the four eye diseases that can threaten eyesight are diabetic retinopathy, diabetic macular edema, glaucoma and cataracts.
